~~~I just watched a segment on the "CBS Sunday Morning Show".
It was about a "Fat Tuesday" treat..PACZKI.
They were new to me, and I'm half Polish.
He said they have 425 calories each with 25grams of fat,
and that it would take running for 28 minutes to burn off just 1.
He visited with a couple in the 90's who said they have been
eating them before Ash Wednesday every year of their lives.
Paczki did not seem to do them any harm!
Anyway, are they as delicious as the people in Detroit
made them sound???
[i]KT
ps...If you have to "run" for 28mins,
I wonder how long I'd have to w a l k...
Yum! Showed it to the DH, who's a runner, and he said of the 425 calories and 28 minutes to run it off ~ "I'd give it a shot!"
I'm beginning to think I need a walk and all I did is look at the picture of the Pazcki!
It looks a bit like the German "Berliner" (which is what President Kennedy called himself when he said "Ich bin ein Berliner," which pretty much when translated is "I am a jelly donut.") Of course, let's not get started on that kind of stuff or I we will be reminded of a president that can't seem to master his own language...
We have a wonderful German bakery/store about 10 miles up the road that sells the Berliner and all things German but you have to get there early for the good stuff. The German half of me blindly pilots me there at least once a month.
The poczki I eat have about 200-300 calories. 425? It must be a big one.
Everything depend on size
it's something like american donut, maybe a little less sweet and more yeasty with a various fills. Most of people eat with rose or cherry jam, I hate jams ugh.
It's true that many people in Fat Thursday eats Paczki. They are everywhere, in every grocery shop, bakery etc. In a school where I work every one got his paczek My boss ate 5. it's tradition here. You need to buy and share. _________________ If dreams are safe, then they're not really dreams, are they?
Ah ~ sounds a lot like our Western Washington Fair scones ~ also filled with jam (I'm not a jam person either, Kari). You gotta buy a dozen and pass them around. That way you can spread the guilt.
By *tried* KT, do you mean you made those yourself?
>>>...By *tried* KT,
~~~No Darlin'...We had them at the Cafe Nola
restaurant in Philadelphia. They were yummy, and
reminded me of "zeppoli".
My 'other half' is Italian, and my Grandmom
made them every year.
I liked mine with honey drizzled over them instead
of the powdered sugar.
Here's a receipe I found that is much like
the ones I remember Grandmom making:
| Quote: |
Zeppoli (Italian Fried Bread Dough )
12 servings 30 min 15 min prep
Change to: servings US Metric
1 (1/4 ounce) package active dry yeast
1 cup water
1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
1 quart vegetable oil (for frying)
2 tablespoons confectioners' sugar
Heat about 3 inches of oil in a saucepan to 375°F (119°C).
In a large bowl, dissolve yeast in 1/2 cup warm water; set aside for 10 minutes.
Stir the remaining 1/2 cup water into the bowl.
Add flour, beating vigorously until a soft dough forms.
Turn the dough out onto a smooth surface, and knead with greased hands until smooth.
Place dough in a greased bowl, and turn to coat the surface.
Cover with a damp cloth.
Let rise in a warm place until double in bulk, about 1 to 1/1/2 hours.
Fry golf ball sizes of dough in batches until golden brown.
Drain on paper towels.
Sprinkle with confectioners' sugar, and eat while still hot. |

~~~My cousin reminded me of *another* one we had
before lent from Mom's side of the family...
Fastnachts
They called it "Shrove Tuesday".
Traditionally they are fired in lard...but our family
switched to veg oil in later years.
Does your G~Bakery sell them too?
Hmmm....they don't look familiar but I will run that one by my mom. Sometimes different regions make different goodies. Or it could be one of those things (like my favorite cake) where the really early bird gets the worm cuz they make very little and it goes fast. And, as you all prolly know, there is absolutely no *early* in this bird. So, if they make 'em, I miss 'em.
Chrusciki (Polish Bow Tie Cookies)
Makes 7 dozen.
1 tablespoon unsalted butter
2 large eggs
5 large egg yolks
3 tablespoons granulated sugar
1 1/2 teaspoons salt
1 teaspoon pure orange extract
1 teaspoon pure lemon extract
1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
1 teaspoon distilled white vinegar
1 tablespoon rum
3 tablespoons sour cream
1 teaspoon freshly grated lemon zest
1 teaspoon grated orange zest
2 to 3 cups all-purpose flour
Pure vegetable shortening, for deep-frying
Confectioners' sugar, sifted, for sprinkling
Directions:
Melt butter, and combine with eggs, egg yolks, granulated sugar, salt,
extracts, vinegar, rum, and sour cream in a large, heavy mixer.
Using the paddle attachment, beat on medium-high
until lemon colored. Add citrus zests.
Gradually add enough flour to produce a fairly stiff dough.
Turn out onto a floured board, and knead for 8 to 10 minutes,
adding flour if necessary, until dough blisters, becomes elastic,
and can be handled easily.
Cut dough in half, and wrap one half with plastic wrap;
reserve at room temperature.
Roll half of dough very, very thin, and cut into strips
about 4 inches long and 1 1/4 inches wide.
Cut the ends on a diagonal. Slit each piece in the center,
and pull one end through the slit.
Place on a parchment-lined baking sheet,
and cover with a towel to keep moist.
Repeat with other half of dough.
Heat shortening in a cast-iron frying pan
to 375 degrees. and fry the dough strips,
a few at a time until lightly browned,
about 1 minute, turning once with a long fork or tongs.
Drain chrusciki on brown paper bags;
transfer to a cooling rack, and sprinkle with confectioners’ sugar.
Store, tightly covered, in wax-paper-lined tins.
Note: This recipe makes an enormous quantity,
so it can be halved if you wish, but do not divide the orange,
lemon, and vanilla extracts.
ps...My Mom always put in a few shots, not a tablespoon!  |
they are time-consuming as well. take a day free hehehe
eh I love them. The worst is that you cant buy them in a shop or bakery, if they are (very rare) they are quite expensive and never as good as home made. _________________ If dreams are safe, then they're not really dreams, are they?
~~~Ah yes Kari, chrusciki are always
better when Mama makes them at home.
I must make a correction...the man on the
Sunday Morning Show actually
said "It takes 48 minutes to burn off
one pazcki", not 28 minutes.
I am looking forward to my first pazcki
next Mardi Gras........................ |

Welcome, Kari! I'm a little behind here, between work and trying not to get really sick since I'm only a little sick now, but I'm Amy, the resident videomaker. I've made six videos about Men in Trees so far, and am planning a few more, once the show gets back on the air and I can get the scenes I need. I also made...let me think here...11 videos of Another World that have Anne in them as one or both of her characters from that show, Vicky and Marley. Welcome to our board!
All of these sweets look delicious!
