~~~*Another* b'day present for you Amy...
Erma was so wise & so funny:
"When your mother asks, "Do you want a piece of advice?"
it is a mere formality. It doesn't matter if you answer
yes or no. You're going to get it anyway."
"My theory on housework is, if the item doesn't
multiply, smell, catch fire, or block the refrigerator door,
let it be. No one else cares. Why should you?"
"Never lend your car to anyone to whom you have given birth."
"I never leaf through a copy of National Geographic
without realizing how lucky we are to live in a society
where it is traditional to wear clothes."
"I take a very practical view of raising children.
I put a sign in each of their rooms:
''Checkout Time is 18 years.'' "
...and my fav:
"When I stand before God at the end of my life,
I would hope that I would not have a single bit
of talent left, and could say,
"I used everything you gave me"."
LOVE THAT! Love them all, but really love that one. Thanks for sharing.
Erma Bombeck was an amazing lady. She faced years of illness with courage, grace, dignity, and above all humor. She was the first humorist I ever liked--the first book of hers I ever read was Family: The Ties That Bind--and Gag! when I was 10 years old; it was published that same year (1987). She's had a lot of great quotes, but the last one is probably her most serious (outside of her book I Want to Grow Up, I Want to Grow Hair, I Want to Go to Boise, which she wrote about children with cancer) but also her best (that wasn't funny).
Erma is missed.... I always tried to catch her columns in the paper. A library near where my late mother lived had a cassette tape of her doing a live show in front of an audience somewhere. It was so hilarious; I used one of the listening stations in the library and would sometimes laugh out loud, which of course got me the dirty look of the day from the librarian! |
