WARNING!! SPOILERS AHEAD!

So, did anyone think Jack was dead?
Even for a second? Anyone?
I only ask because when we had the read-thru
for the episode previous to this one,
James (the actor who plays Jack)
was actually a bit nervous.
Not only was he NOT in the last episode at all,
but we learn from Chief Celia that
Jack is lost at sea -- possibly forever!
You can see why it might make an actor a little anxious.
In general, we make it a point not to tell the actors
about any upcoming storylines, but in this case
we did tell James not to worry. He'd be back, very soon.

Overall, I have to say that this was a challenging episode to write.
It was tricky because it ran the emotional gamut
for Marin -- going from total despair at learning the news
of Jack's likely death, to impotent anger as the news
finally sinks in, to utter joy at their unexpected reunion.
Incidentally, that scene at the dock is my personal favorite.
Even watching take after take,
I never got tired of seeing the moment
when Marin realizes that the man walking along the dock
isn't a ghost, it's actually Jack.
Still, we wanted to do a different slant
on the traditional lovers' reunion.
Everyone's seen the romantic "run through the field" moment.
And really, who doesn't love it? It's classic!
The challenge was to find a way to have
this classic moment, but still make it our own.
That's where the bike came in.
Seeing Jack get bowled over by Marin's runaway bike
cut through what might've been a very melodramatic
moment and hopefully, was a little funny, too.

I also enjoyed getting to explore Jerome's musical back-story.
Last season when we talked in general about the show
and the characters one of the questions that kept
popping up was 'what sort of people move to Alaska?'
One of the answers we talked about was
'people that are either running away from something
or who have something to hide.'
That idea of a character having a secret
past was something I was really drawn to.
Jerome seemed both the likeliest and unlikeliest
candidate for that particular idea. He's someone that
always seems to know something about everything,
but you're never exactly sure how he knows it.
(Also, you careful viewers out there may remember
seeing Jerome ponder an interesting picture of himself
alongside important looking folks after he goes sober
for Patrick's wedding.) The best part of this storyline was
when we were discussing it in our writer's room,
a few people mentioned some of their own hidden talents
and we discovered that one of our producers
actually was a concert pianist! Who knew?

The theme of the episode -- which may have been
kind of hidden since we didn't have one of our faithful
question on the radio scenes -- was regret.
I'll tell you one of the things I don't regret -- having
my husband Andrew Friedman play Dr. Thompson,
Cash's doctor  (He's an actor -- it’s not like he's an accountant
and I just decided to put him in the episode).  Wasn't he delightful?
But in all seriousness, we liked the theme of regret
and what it does to people.  When your life flashes before you,
you don't want to regret one of those moments
that passes you by.  So, why not have Jack and Marin
move in together?  Maybe? Do you think it's too soon?
Or do you think they've been through enough and
they're ready for this step?  Time will tell!
Or… next week's episode.

OMG!  OMG!  OMG!

I am soooo excited this morning I can hardly stand it and I can hardly type fast enough!

Okay, first of all, I watched the whole epi last night and I finally get IT.  I hope you tried and true MiT fans loved that epi cuz I sure did and everything that Cara said was true.  That whole bike thing was just too funny but made the *reunion* so much better!!

Last night I discovered two new *faves* ~ Jerome and that gal (sorry, don't know all the names yet) that finally got to wear the cheerleader uniform.  I have always thought she was a hoot but when Ben (?) gave her the uniform, she looked like she died and went to Heaven!

Here's another reason I am so excited ~ all through the epi our local news channel would do a promo about their 11 p.m. news running a segment on one of MiT's newest stars and his local connection and they kept showing a clip of Scott Elrod's "Cash."  So I stayed up and tuned in and turns out Scott's "Nana" lives up the road in Renton!!  She is too funny when she talks about him running around without a shirt all the time ~ ""!  All her girlfriends thinks he's a hunk!!  I have attached the link to KOMO and the vid is right next to the picture under "Top Video."

Also, cuz I wasn't sure of Scott real name, I looked up his bio on ABC.com this morning and found out that like me, Scott grew up a military brat (he was even born in Germany like I was) but that's not all.  His father was a Top Gun pilot who flew an A-4 in the feature film Top Gun AND his step-father is a soon to be retired F-16 Air Force pilot.  It only gets better for me ~ Scott himself was in the Air Force and trained to be an air traffic controller like my Pops!!!   When I finally got to the part about him having a yellow lab named Harley Davidson, I was totally in love!

Squeeeeeeeee!!

Mai (pronounced "My") is the gal who got the cheerleader uniform last night, and that was HYSTERICAL! And yes, it was Ben who gave it to her. She starts to run out of the bar and he has to call her back to give her the pom-poms, LOL! But she had said earlier in the episode that her dream had been to be a Dallas Cowboys Cheerleader ever since she saw them on The Love Boat.

Anne was AMAZING last night!

And I LOVED the effects they did with her various reactions:

--After Theresa comes out to the bar after getting the phone call from Jack's brother that the Coast Guard is calling off the search, and she's crying, and everyone else looks devastated, they had that hazy effect as everyone kept talking to Marin, and their voices were muffled as they offered their condolences--it illustrated that Marin was, literally, moving in a fog after hearing that Jack was presumed dead, and therefore neither saw nor heard what her friends were saying too clearly, even when they tried to offer her comfort. After Sara squeezed her hand and Annie hugged her, she said she needed to be alone and left.

--Then Marin winds up at Jack's house. She's crying, and she's picking up various objects: a pencil from his desk, one of his fishing reels, a framed photograph of him. And then she sees the JACK rock. The rock that she herself wrote his name on and threw off the mountain at the beginning of the season with Cash when they were getting rid of their problems. She hadn't known until she saw it there (I don't think she knew, anyway) that Jack had found the rock while he was looking for her in the arctic cyclone and kept it.

And that's when it all falls apart. I knew she was going to throw the rock, but I had no idea she was going to chuck it through Jack's plate-glass window, and then trash the house. And all of it was done with no dialogue, not even any primal screams. Just Jerome's music, and we could see everything so clearly on Anne's face as Marin fell apart. And then that quick shot of her lying in the middle of the wreckage she created. POWERFUL STUFF!

--I don't know about anybody else, but for one awful moment, I was terrified that when Marin saw Jack on the dock, it was going to turn out to be a dream or a daydream. But the closer she got, the more the man looked like Jack. So she starts running, and her bike gets away from her and knocks Jack down.

And then she's at Jack's side, and he looks up at her and says, "This isn't the welcome home I had in mind, but it'll do," and she's kissing him, and it wasn't until they came back from commercial and showed Jack telling Marin about the Russian freighter and all that stuff that I realized it WAS real, like I hoped it would be. So I was very relieved about that!

--Then Jack kept saying he wanted to go home, and the look on Marin's face and the way she kept putting him off, because she didn't want him to see that she trashed his house, LOL.

--Annie broke my heart last night too. At Jack's welcome-home party at the Chieftain, she couldn't stop hugging him, and when she explained why--"I'm just so glad you came back and that you REMEMBER me!"--I was all, "Ohhh, Annie!"

Then she had that great line after Jerome was explaining the three movements of a sonata, and how the middle part is always murky and dark and gets away from the theme: "This murky middle's stuff a b!tch." AMEN, SISTER!

Patrick fell asleep with Annie watching It's a Wonderful Life, and then Annie got her heart broken again when Patrick asked out that snooty out of town beeyotch.

And I was FURIOUS when Patrick took the snooty out of town beeyotch on a picnic to the field where he and Annie had their first picnic together.

That is, I was FURIOUS until Patrick said he felt like this had already happened before. That's when I was SCREAMING at the TV, "It DID! With ANNIE!"

But the BEST Patrick and Annie part was when he told her that the date was lame, and then he remembered that Annie didn't like cheese when he saw her eating the dairy-free pizza. PATRICK REMEMBERED SOMETHING ABOUT ANNIE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It's a start, I'll take it! Keep remembering, Patrick! PLEASE, keep remembering!

--Cash lying about his illness is only going to come back to bite him in the butt. That's my prediction anyway. And that is VERY cool about his life's parallels to yours, and all of his Nana's friends thinking he's a hottie!

--The radio knob in Marin's bra was hilarious, as was Jack's "You getting any good stations in there?" And now they're moving in together. WOW!

--Sara kinda/sorta mooning Eric's prayer circle was a riot. No pants. I like them together too. And now Eric has land to build his church!

--And Theresa wants to have a baby? WHOA! Doesn't look like Ben's on board the baby bandwagon.

I REALLY hope MIT gets renewed for a third season! There are so many more stories to be told by and about the citizens of Elmo!

Amy
