March 13, 2000... It should have been the day that Paulina Cory would be celebrating her fourth wedding anniversary with husband Joe Carlino. Instead, it was the day that she would be burying his body into the cold winter ground.
Joe, who was named Captain of the BCPD in February 1997, had focused all his attention on uncovering a recent drug ring that had settled within Bay City. Not only because of his position of the force, but also because he wanted to make the city a safer place for he and Paulina to raise Dante Carlino, their toddler son. Joe had instituted the help of Gary and Cameron Sinclair, two detectives of the BCPD.
The case was solved late on the night of Monday, March 6, 2000 at an abandoned warehouse near the Bay City Harbor. It ended with a shoot-out between Joe and the drug ring leader, both who sustained severe chest wounds. They were immediately rushed to BCUH and admitted into ICU.
Gary had the misfortune of having to call Paulina with the devastating news about Joe's condition. At the same time, Cameron had decided to call Amanda Cory, his wife, with the same news. Although they had been married less than a year, he had witnessed how the Cory's came together in times of tragedy.
After convincing Paulina to drop Dante off at the Cory Mansion, Amanda escorted her to BCUH where she demanded that Jamie Frame, their half-brother, better do anything and everything that needed to be done to save Joe's life.
Paulina would spend the next four days camped out at Joe's bedside, who had quickly slipped into coma after extensive surgery had removed the bullet that was lodged near his heart. He also suffered a black eye, busted lip, several broken ribs, a punctured right lung, excessive loss of blood, and a broken left arm. Every hour that he remained unconscious was another hour that his condition became more severe.
Joe's vitals would show a tough fight to battle back from the injuries, but obviously they were too severe and he would succumb to them on Friday, March 10, 2000. Against her family's objections, Paulina had insisted that the funeral happen on their anniversary. "Until death do us part" were vows spoken during their wedding ceremony. It was the day that they were joyously united...and it would be the day that they would be tragically torn apart.
And so on Monday, March 13, 2000... The residents of Bay City gathered together to lay Joe Carlino to rest. _________________ "I used to think that I loved you, then I couldn't stand you, and now... Now I'm remembering all the parts I loved about you." ~ Paulina to Jake |
