|
|
Okay, I'm not 100% on this one, but the board has been pretty slow/laggy lately. I'm not sure how long this has been going on, seeing as I've been bad and haven't been around.
I'm not sure *exactly* what the cause of the problem is, but my best idea (and the most likely) would be that the number of pics that are displayed in our posts has a lot to do with it.
I want to try putting some of the images that we have on here under links, instead of making them directly viewable in the posts. What I mean is, instead of putting the links in between the [IMG] tags like normal, just post the link to photobucket or whatever.
Unfortunately, images/graphics take up a lot of what is called bandwidth/space on a website, and can make it run slow. In fact, a site can actually stop functioning if it runs out of bandwidth.
If anyone has any objections with this, please let me know. If not, I'd like to start going into the posts that are heavy on images and start converting them to links. We don't have to link *every* image, but I think we do need to cut back on the number of images we display here.
***Perhaps we can keep the smaller images on display, and link the larger ones?***
I need your help to do this too, if you guys wouldn't mind? If you can go into your own posts where you know you've posted largeish images and make them all links, that would be a big help. I know I haven't been around, for which I am totally to blame, but because of this I'm not quite sure where the heavy images are.
I'm sorry if I sound bossy or whatever, it's not my intention - I just want to help out with the slowness issue, and I truly think this will.
Thanks, guys!

Oy ~ do you mean just the pics or are you including smilies and such, also posted from Photobucket?

Nah the smilies are probably okay. I'm referring mostly to the super large pictures, like those in the family album etc. _________________

The pics are the personality of this site.
Hope we don't have to lose too many of them.
How boring if all the posts look like this one. |

Nah, we don't have to get rid of them all.
How about if we trying keeping it to one or two shown images per post, and link the rest? See if that makes any difference? _________________

Sounds like a plan

What about avatars, like mine, that move? Are they OK? _________________ WWWD? (What would Wallingford do?) |

The avatars should be fine, I think. _________________

Yay!!! I thought we had to lose ALL the pics. I will go in and see if I have any large ones in the family album though I try to shrink mine to avatar size before I post here. It's easily done using Photobuckets free editing software.

I don't know whether it is because of pics that the board is slow or not. Honestly, since the moment I joined the site (a year ago next month) this board has been the slowest to load board I've ever belonged to. Pages have always taken an age to fully load---I've never complained (and I'm not now, just saying ), because I love the content of the board and have always been willing to put up with it. It just makes me wonder if it's not for some other reason. Oh and it's not my connection speed that is an issue, I know that for certain. _________________

Now pay attention:
It's cuz yer in Australia, Karina, and dat cable connection is under the ocean (don't know what ocean, me as bad at geography as I am at math) and when you hit SUBMIT (aka "DEBUG") yer stuff has to travel a really long long long long long long long long long way on that little cable to get to the board, which, if I'm not mistaken is in sitting in Wendy's house.

LOL...yeah, *A* ...that's how it works. LOL.
Anywho, if it's not bothering anyone too much, it's also not bothering me. I would just hate to see it slow down to a point where it wouldn't function. I guess we could try to keep the pics for now, in the meantime I'll look into any other possibilities as to why it might be laggy. _________________

Thanks for all the work you do to make
things better, Liz. One of the websites I
visit with pictures has a limit of 15K for
each and every picture, and that seems
to work there. It could be a solution.
Hugs,
