"Stranger Than Fiction" Part 9
Felicia, the real Felicia, is at home in her own bed when the telephone rings. She's still exhausted from the previous day's book signing. Slowly, she picks up the receiver.
Felicia: (groggily) Hello?
Cass: Hi, Felicia! It's Cass. (pause) Did I call at a bad time?
Felicia: No, but I just woke up. I went straight to bed after I got home from the book signing...and I've been there ever since. So, what's going on? What's on your mind?
Cass: It's about Wallingford.
Felicia is now fully awake.
Felicia: (alarmed) What's wrong? Is he OK?
Cass: Yes. He's fine, but I think you should know that he's writing a book.
Felicia nearly falls out of bed.
Felicia: Wally? Our Wally?
Cass: (groans) One and the same! (pause) I'd like for us to go over to his place sometime today to discuss it with him.
Felicia: Well, I always knew he had talent, but somehow I've never pictured him writing a book. I can't wait to read it!
Cass: Believe me, Felicia. It's a doozy!
Felicia: You don't sound too pleased, Cass.
Cass: (shortly) I'm not! (trying to calm himself) You'll understand after you've read it.
Felicia: (bewildered) OK. Let's meet there around two o'clock.
Cass: (chuckles softly) I wouldn't miss it for the world!
* * * * *
Later, at Wally's apartment, Wally is flipping through his notebooks and notices blank pages that once held fictionalized information he'd written about the television realm.
Wally: Wow! They really didn't want anyone to know my relationship with them!
He shudders at the thought of having woken up next to Endora.
Wally: (fuming) How could she impersonate Felicia like that? (sighs) Because I'm a smart-ass, that's why!
A knock at the door jolts him back from his thoughts.
Wally: (yells) It's open!
Cass and Felicia walk in. Felicia smiles and runs over to hug Wally. He eyes her suspiciously.
Wally: (backing away from her) Felicia, is that really you?
Felicia: Of course, Wally!
Wally: (nervously) At any time during the night, did we kiss...or make sweet love?
Felicia: (stunned) What?! Wally, I haven't seen you in three days!
Wally: You're absolutely sure?
Felicia: I think I'd remember something like that!
Wally heaves a sigh of relief and gives her a hug. And Felicia wonders if her nose is deceiving her, as Wally smells like a combination of Irish Spring and Carpet Fresh.

"Stranger Than Fiction" Part 10
Felicia sniffs the air and looks at Wally.
Felicia: What smells so...um...clean, Wally?
Wally: (fidgets) Oh, that's me. I took a few showers this morning.
Cass stares at Wally in disbelief.
Cass: A few?
Wally: (mumbles) Forty-seven.
Now, it's Felicia's turn to be surprised.
Felicia: How many?
Wally: (clearing his throat) Forty-seven.
Cass: (trying not to laugh) Why would anyone need to take that many showers? (pause) Have you been standing underneath pigeons with diarrhea?
Wally: (nervously) Something like that, Cass.
Felicia instinctively sees that Wally is uncomfortable.
Felicia: (thinking) I guess it's up to me to change the subject.
She picks up a notebook from the sofa and opens it to the first page.
Felicia: (to Wally) What's this?
Wally: It's just a little something I'm writing.
Felicia: (reads aloud) "Love Finds Washington" by Wallingford Wolfgang Witherspoon, the 24th. (gasps) That's your real name?
Wally: (sighs) Yes.
Cass: (to Felicia) Read on!
Felicia: (skimming the pages) May City?...Alicia Lamont?...Sass Winslow? (pause) Sass?
Cass glares at Wally, who's feeling more embarrassed by the minute.
Wally: Sass is short for Sassafras.
Felicia flips to the last page of the notebook. Her eyes widen as she continues to read silently. Cass stands next to her.
Cass: (reading aloud) "...and Alicia and Washington lived happily ever after." (gazes at Wally) Did they?
Wally: (rolls his eyes) It's fiction, Cass! Honestly, I don't know what you're so worked up about!
At that moment, the telephone rings. Wally, glad for a distraction, picks up the receiver.
Wally: Hello? Yes? (pause) No, it's really not a good time. (long pause) No, of course I'm not ashamed of you. You're like a brother to me! I'll call you back in in hour, OK?
He hangs up the phone and faces Felicia.
Wally: (gulps) Well, what do you think, Felicia? Be brutal...I can take it!
Felicia: (stammers) I...I'm not quite sure what I think of it, Wally. It's interesting, that's for sure! (pause) But, why all the blank pages? Would you mind explaining that to me?
Wally groans. He just knows it's going to be a long afternoon.

"Stranger Than Fiction" Part 11
Wally takes a deep breath as he collects his thoughts.
Wally: (thinking) I don't dare tell Felicia or Cass anything about the television realm. There could be serious repercussions, and I'm not willing to risk their safety!
Wally carefully studies his friends' faces. After hesitating for a moment, he makes a decision.
Wally: (to Felicia) Here's the answer to your question about the blank pages: those pages represent the times I couldn't think of anything to write, so I left them blank as a reminder to myself. (sigh) If I'd known writing a book would be such a hassle, I never would've started it in the first place! I just wanted you to be proud of me, Felicia. (pause) Maybe I should just burn the darned thing!
Cass: (quickly) Yes!
Felicia: (almost as quickly) No!
Felicia bestows the Queen Mother of dirty looks on Cass.
Felicia: (continues) Wally, I am proud of you...I hope you've always known that.
Wally: (smiles) Thanks, Felicia! (pause) I've pretty much decided not to publish it, though...at least not right now.
Cass now feels like kicking himself for his conceited attitude toward Wally's book. He clears his throat tensely.
Cass: And...I, uh...guess I've been acting like a jackass about the whole thing.
Felicia: (snorts) Yes, you have!
Cass: (ignoring her) I'm proud of you, too, Wally.
Wally: (chuckles) I understand, Cass. I wouldn't want to be called Sassafras, either.
The three friends laugh heartily.
Cass: (to Wally) So, your name really is Wallingford Wolfgang Witherspoon, the 24th? I didn't just dream the whole thing when I had the flu?
Wally: It's true. You had a really high fever when I told you that. I'm surprised you even remember! (pause) You started projectile vomiting pretty soon afterwards.
Felicia: (disgusted) Wally!
Wally grins sheepishly.
Cass: Yes...I remember you telling me about your name and your lookalike cousin.
Wally: (puzzled) My what?
Cass: Your cousin...Wilberforce.
Wally: (shakes his head) I don't have a cousin named Wilberforce, Cass. I have an old friend who resembles me somewhat, but we're not related as far as I know.
Felicia: Have we ever met him?
Wally: No, but he's not someone you'd forget in a hurry. He's an actor on a soap opera.
Felicia: That sounds exciting!
Wally: (shrugs) I suppose, but I bet he doesn't have crazy adventures like we do! (pause) Hey! I've got a bottle of champagne. Let's drink a toast to our friendship!
Cass: Sounds like a plan!
Felicia: That's fine with me!
Wally hurriedly brings out the champagne and three glasses. He pours the contents of the bottle, and Cass and Felicia each pick up a glass.
Wally: (raising his glass) To us...the Three Musketeers!
Felicia and Cass: (in unison) The Three Musketeers!
The friends clink their glasses together and take a sip of champagne, all the while looking forward to the further adventures that lay ahead.
