Our cable has become so darned expensive that we're considering a switch. We can get the same channels from DirectTV for like $40.00 less a month for the first year and still $30.00 less a month after that. I've heard that satellite dishes are not too reliable in bad weather but our cable isn't all that reliable either(thanks to Comcast we almost missed the final game of the World Series).....Any suggestions? |

OMG, we use to have Cable, but our Bill went up like every other month!! Back then sn wasn't offered on cable & AW had jes been picked up so I new I had less than a year before my Boy showed back up knockin' on Big Donna's door lookin' all scrumptious with Marley standin' there lookin' like a wigged boob!
So the plottin' started. I pulled all my Vicky tricks outta the bag & started workin' on the DH to get a Sat. The man didn't know what hit him!Ultimately,Iwon out usin' the "I pay the Cable bill & I'm gonna have it turned off cuz I refuse to pay this ridiculous bill"...
One month before Hot Tommy showed up, I had the dish on top of my house!
Get Directv! Don't listen to poeple when they tell ya the weather's gonna be an issue! Very rarely does our Sat go out & usually it goes out before the storm gets to us & isn't out for very long. The benefits out weight the negatives!
I luv my Sat so much I would stand on the roof with my arms wrapped around it durin' a Tornado to protect it!
Course now it's NOT cuz of sn...Bastards! _________________ http://www.freewebs.com/eplinlover/index.htm

We just have cable, but the only channel I watch anymore is CBS, mostly for How I Met Your Mother, and now a little for Ghost Whisperer (I don't like scary, spooky stuff, but David Conrad is worth braving the spooky stuff for).
And my cable company dropped SN last month. I laughed when I realized they'd done it, because I truly don't care about that so-called channel anymore.

Thanks for sharing your experience. You're so enthusiastic about it, DirectTV should put you in their commercials!
Seriously, we've been weighing this for weeks and I appreciate your help. Thanks!! |

I have had DirecTV for over twelve years and love it. Will never go back to cable.
Weather is not a big problem,IMO.
You will lose signal during heavy thunderstorms for a short time, but once the cloud moves away it returns(it's not the rain that blocks the signal, but the heavy clouds from a thunderstorm that do block it). If your dish is properly installed, snow shouldn't be a problem either.
When I moved three years ago,I made sure that my DirecTV was relocated to the new place a week before the rest of the furniture was brought in,so I wouldn't miss any TV.
You should definitely get DirecTV.
Also,if you subscribe to DirecTV,Dish Network or cable you won't have to worry about the transition to digital TV in February, that is only for people that just use "rabbit ears" or rooftop antennas and they will have to get a converter box. |

You can do what I did. We have used Directtv and Dish Network.
Never problems with either one, even in bad weather. Some of that may have to do with how many trees you have shadowing your roof, but that is with a cable dish too.
I was ticked because we had Dish Network for 7 years and was a totally low-maintenance customer. Always paid our bill on time ect. Then I realized that they had Dish 500 and the reciever we had was way outdated. I wanted them to upgrade for free because that is what they were giving new customers - for free. Eventually I called to shut it down and then they agreed but it was too late to impress me.
We got through the summer with nothing but then basketball season started and I knew we couldn't do without.
I went to the store and got a listing of both channels and then I took a highlighter and marked the ones on each set that we watch.
DirectTv had more channels.
I noticed that they are marketing to different demographics. It depends on what you like more.
DirectTV is more for the young group. Kids, 40 somethings.
Dish Network was more to the older crowd with more home shopping and religious channels.
They are both owned by the same group so the difference won't really be seen by a company difference.
Good Luck!

Thank you all so much for your help. Your experiences have tipped the scale for me. I think we're finally going to do it----dump Comcast and try DirectTV.
Whatever happened to the good ole days of three local channels, PBS and UHF. Now it seems as if there are more channels and less to watch.
Oh, well....Thanks again!! |
