OMG, I didn't know this....

Budget cuts caused Phelps to institute a serial killer storyline, culminating in the gruesome murder of another fan favorite, Frankie (Alice Barrett). The story had actually called for Donna (Anna Stuart) to be offed, but massive fan protest caused Phelps to rewrite the episodes. Phelps decided to then kill off either Frankie or Paulina, and when a focus group responded lukewarm to Frankie but warmer to Paulina, Phelps gave the greenlight to axe Frankie. However, this caused another massive rampage of upset protest from loyal viewers of the show and fans of Frankie, and Phelps quickly asked then-head writer Margaret DePriest to re-write Frankie's exit so that the character would at least still live. DePriest, eager to satisfy her wish to see Cass return to his former rogue ways, vehemently refused and left Frankie's death as written.

1st they were gonna kill Donna??? O M G!!

Not only did Phelps suck...DePriest did too!!! Like she could'n't jes have Frankie leave...That would've been ENUFF to make Cass go back to his rogue ways! Mad

I know it, I HATE IT, and I choose to ignore it. In my head and my heart, Frankie and Cass lived happily ever after. I have a fanfic planned to that effect.

What doesn't make sense is that they say budget cuts were to blame, but yet they were still able to brig Alice Barrett back as a different character??? Obviously they could afford her after all... they should have just kept her!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

She couldn't even get that right because Cass didn't "return to his rogue ways."  He flopped around the show for years before they hooked him up with Lila.  Two of the "Three Musketeers" were available and they blew it.  I think it would have been fun to see an "older" Cass & Felicia get into mischief knowing that they should have "known better" but couldn't help themselves.  Instead, Cass was wasted and Felicia became a homewrecker.  We coulda wrote better storylines.

KT, that was in JFP's Wikipedia entry---the basis was there, but I expanded on the details to get more of the truth out.  Evil or Very Mad

Honestly though, I think the show started to seriously tank in '94. To me, "Another World" comes to a happy end in the spring of '94.

All of us feel that way but do you think the actors felt that way?  I never heard any of them say anything bad about her.  Of course, she was prolly jes beyotch enough (with a little power) to end their careers if they opened their mouths.  Anna Holbrook even thanked her in her Emmy acceptance speech.  And I think that LD & DF both commented favorably when the Felicia/John (shudder...shudder...snarl) affair was brought up.

How long did she stay with AW anyway?  Was she there after 1995?

In watching the early '87 epi's, I noticed that Christopher Goutman directed a lot of the episodes.  Wasn't he in charge at the end (1999)?  I wish he would have gone back and looked at the late 80's/early 90's epi's to see the magic.

They probably wouldn't have said anything due to the fact that they didn't want to burn any bridges. The unfortunate truth is that JFP is still employed and many AW actors are not(in acting jobs that we know of anyway). I do remember Alice Barrett thanking Chris Goutman for bringing her back at the end and saying how much she respected him which I took, in part, as a jab at JFP(as if she was saying that she didn't respect her). That might not have been what Alice was saying at all, but that's how I took it. The changes JFP made at AW affected Alice more than anyone but I know she had too much class to badmouth the witch at the time.....I think her fans took care of that for her anyway.

It annoys be to no end that DePriest would have that kind of clout. Headwriters are on the payroll same as the actors. Now, if she had created the character of Frankie I could almost see the EP relenting, but she didn't and should never have been given that kind of authority. This still ticks me off some 20 odd years down the road.
