Actress Natasha Richardson has died at the age of 45 today, March 18, 2009, in New York City's Lenox Hill Hospital following a skiing accident in which she suffered a traumatic brain injury. The accident occurred Monday, March 16, in Montreal, Canada. Tasha, as she was known to her family and friends, was on a skiing holiday in Montreal with her sons Micheal, 13, and Daniel, 12, when she fell during a skiing lesson. Initially, she was fine, laughing and joking and walking back to her hotel room on her own two feet. But an hour later, she complained of a severe headache and was taken to a local hospital. Her husband, Liam Neeson, rushed from the set of the film he was working on in Toronto to be by his wife's side, where he has remained all this time. Conflicting reports popped up all over the Internet Monday night, all day and night Tuesday, and for most of Wednesday afternoon, with the only solid factual piece of information given being that she was transferred from the hospital in Montreal to Lenox Hill Hospital in New York, where she and Liam Neeson made their home with their sons. Family members, including her sons, her mother Vanessa Redgrave, and her sister Joely Richardson (of Nip/Tuck fame) kept vigil at Lenox Hill Hospital. The family released a statement on the evening of March 18 announcing her passing:

"Liam Neeson, his sons and the entire family are shocked and devastated by the tragic death of their beloved Natasha. They are profoundly grateful for the support, love and prayers of everyone."

Natasha Richardson was part of a British acting dynasty, the daughter of Vanessa Redgrave and the late Tony Richardson. She appeared in such movies as The Handmaid's Tale and the 1998 remake of The Parent Trap, and won a Tony Award in 1998 for her portrayal of Sally Bowles in the revival of Cabaret.

But it was her life with her family that made her happiest, as evidenced by these pictures I found, where you can see the love and pride she feels for her husband, sons, mother, and sister, and this quote she gave an interviewer in 1998:

"For all its exhaustion and difficulties, I have this charmed life of a strong family life, with my two little baby boys and my husband and my home and my friends, and getting to be a gypsy playing these parts. [Acting] was my dream, and it's kind of unthinkable to do anything else."

Natasha Richardson is survived by her husband Liam Neeson, whom she married in 1994; sons Micheal, age 13, and Daniel, age 12, Neeson; mother Vanessa Redgrave; sister Joely Richardson; aunt Lynn Redgrave; and uncle Corin Redgrave. She was preceded in death by her father Tony Richardson and grandfather Sir Michael Redgrave. A small private funeral service is being planned.

I followed this story all day yesterday and today hoping against hope that she would recover. How many times have we all hit our head with nothing more than a little bump to show for it.

The movie I associate her most with is The Parent Trap remake with AW's own Lindsay Lohan (which I think LL made right after leaving her role as Alli Fowler). I did see her recently in Patty Hearst, which I found interesting b/c I remember when the heiress was kidnapped and all that followed.

RIP, Natasha.

I've been following the story too, Nettie, and it's just so sad. She was so young. I loved her in The Parent Trap. She was my favorite in that movie, actually, and it was largely because of her performance as Elizabeth, or Lizzie, the mother, that I enjoy the remake much more than the original version of The Parent Trap. Prayers go out to Liam, Micheal and Daniel Neeson, Vanessa Redgrave, and Joely Richardson. Crying or Very sad

Unbelievably sad. I was hoping against hope as well and praying for a miracle for Natasha and her family. Sometimes life just doesn't make any sense at all. I pray that she is at peace and that the Lord will give her family the strength to go on....something that at this moment I'm sure seems inconceivable without her.

My heart goes out to her family

I had to go to the funeral Home Monday cuz a friend died. Velvia found out 3 weeks ago she had a brain tumor. Hard to believe you can be taken out so fast. Her DH was hit by a Tractor Trailer while helpin' a stranded motorest on I85 about 5 years ago. I know she's happy now cuz she's with Vernon, but it SUX for the rest of us that she's not here anymore.... *Luv ya MawMaw, Miss you already*
