Hey, everybody.
As I'm sure you've all heard by now, actress Natasha Richardson passed away in New York City yesterday at the age of 45 following a skiing accident that occurred in Montreal, Canada on Monday. She is survived by her husband of 15 years, Liam Neeson, their sons Micheal (age 13) and Daniel (age 12), her mother Vanessa Redgrave, her sister Joely Richardson (which you may know from her role on Nip/Tuck), her aunt Lynn Redgrave, and her uncle Corin Redgrave. She was preceded in death by her father Tony Richardson, and her maternal grandparents Sir Michael Redgrave and Rachel Kempson.
I always admired Natasha Richardson, and I'm saddened at her passing. I was looking online at all these articles about her and interviews she had given and these picture galleries that were put together of her. There were a couple of picture galleries devoted to her and Liam Neeson, he was her husband.
And it just really struck me, every picture of them together, you can just see the love and the respect they have for each other, and the pride in each other's accomplishments. They were married for 15 years and had two sons who are 13 and 12, and I mean there are pictures on the Web spanning the whole 15 years of their marriage, and just...It's beautiful. Marriage is not something that my family does well, or happily, or with any kind of success, and I decided a long time ago that I'm going to break that mold if I ever get married. I still feel that way. But now, I look at all these pictures of Natasha Richardson and Liam Neeson, and that's what I want. I want to look at my husband the way Natasha looked at Liam, and I want him to look at me the way Liam looked at Natasha. And they were always somehow physically connected, even when they were on the red carpet at some premiere. They would be holding hands with their fingers intertwined--after 12 years of marriage, mind you!--or standing and looking at each other and you can see the reflections of flash bulbs going off around them and they're standing there with their arms around each other looking at each other, or one of them is laughing at something the other obviously said. She's leaning back against him and they're looking at each other. He has his arm around her shoulders. I can't even fathom how devastated he and their sons must be. I mean, I only know her from the few of her movies that I've seen, and interviews that I read, and she was just so vibrant and full of life, and everybody that knew her that has spoken keeps saying the same things, what a wonderful mother she was, what a loyal friend she was, how deeply she and Liam loved each other.
I tried to upload it to YouTube, but they rejected it because of the song. I chose an obscure song, or at least I've found it to be one that not many people know: "I'll Be There" by The Escape Club, which was originally written after a friend of one of the band's members lost his wife at a young age, when they were in their 30s. I chose the song because I thought that it had kind of a Celtic feel to it, which I found fitting since Natasha was British and Liam is Irish, and lyrically it seemed to describe the situation the best. There are a lot of pictures of Natasha and Liam together through the years in it because they fit the most with the lyrics, and because those were the pictures that were in the greatest abundance. It does also include, however, a picture of Natasha with her sons taken last year, as well as pictures of her as a baby, toddler, and little girl with her parents and sister, and pictures with her mother and sister from recent years, and also some stills from some of her movies and her Tony-winning performance as Sally Bowles in the 1998 revival of Cabaret, and the night she won the Tony for that role.
This is kind of a throwback to the earliest montages I made of AW, before I graduated to videos, because it's a pictorial tribute, and I uploaded it to the same place that I used to upload my montages of AW, so you'll have to go to the link and then download the Natasha Richardson tribute before you can see it, if you want to see it. But I felt very strongly about making it, and about using this song for it, and so here it is:
