As we approach another Easter, I would like to take this opportunity to say that IF YOU HAVE CATS, PLEASE DO NOT BRING AN EASTER LILY INTO YOUR HOUSE!!!
Please read the following article and you'll understand why ~
http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/unleashed/2009/04/as-easter-approaches-cat-owners-should-watch-out-f or-easter-lilies.html
We learned the hard way. I had Gizmo for 16 years and she never touched the plant I would bring home (or received as a gift) every year. But Jasmine's first Easter, she nibbled on a petal. Thank God we have a 24-hour emergency animal clinic within 1/2 an hour of our house (and a vet willing to check with Poison Control after closing). Jasmine spent the next 48 hours being induced to vomit, forced to consume charcoal and hooked up to an IV. When we got through all that, the vets were perplexed as to why our usual chow-hound kitty wouldn't eat. Finally one of them looked in her mouth and it (and her tongue) were covered in blisters cuz the lilies are caustic! That meant another week or two eating baby food and many blood tests to determine if her kidneys were spared. They were and she fully recovered.
Easter lilies belong to a large family of lilies that are toxic only to cats (Tiger & Stargazers are among the others) so please be careful when purchasing flowers for yourself or your cat-owning friends and family.
And that concludes my annual Public Service Announcement! Happy Easter!
