Location: Backing Up Cass and Frankie As They Battle Christy Carson

· Quote

Hey, everybody!

Here are this week's clips, all of which are from January 1993. I have solved the VCR problem, and have another one that is working hooked up to my video capture device. I won't be posting any clips next week due to the fact that I'm working 43 hours between Monday and Sunday for ProFlowers, but clips will resume the week after, probably on May 13.

In the meantime, here are more clips from January 1993. Thanks to Janie for providing them all.

Dean and Lorna Discuss Jenna's Pregnancy

Lorna truly shows that she is a big sister in her reaction to the news of Jenna's pregnancy. She reminds Dean of how defensive Jenna got about the pregnant teenage girl on the talk show, and says this explains Jenna's hissy fit at the apartment earlier. She agrees not to tell anyone yet, and asks Dean where Jenna is. When she learns that Jenna is at home alone, Lorna totally goes into big sister mode and tells Dean to sit down, and she listens while Dean pours out the story about how he found out about the pregnancy, and how he found out after Matt. "Felicia can't deal NOW!" Lorna exclaims, suddenly remembering their mother. When Dean worries that he'll be the kind of father his own father was because his initial reaction was to scream at Jenna, and he left after they had a big fight and came to the studio, Lorna tells him he'll be fine, and sometimes the apple DOES fall far from the tree. When Dean asks Lorna what he's going to do, Lorna just hugs him. Thanks to Janie for the scenes.

Matt and Jenna--Everything Will Be Fine

Jenna thanks Matt. Matt assures Jenna that once Dean has had time to sort this out and calm down, he'll come back, he and Jenna will talk, and everything will be fine. He concludes by telling Jenna that if she needs anything at all, she can call him, and he'll call her tomorrow. He then heads home to his own apartment, and Jenna is left alone at home. Thanks to Janie for the scenes.

Lorna Talks to Rachel, Then Talks to Dean

Lorna arrives at D&M at 8 in the morning to a ringing phone. It's Rachel, who is worried about Felicia because Rachel has been trying to get Felicia on the phone for over an hour, and the phone is busy. Rachel called the phone company and they told her that the phone is off the hook, and in light of recent events, Rachel is concerned. Lorna says she'll see what she can do, then hangs up, and mutters, "Nasty woman," about Rachel. Dean then comes downstairs and asks if that was the phone. Lorna realizes that Dean spent the night at the studio and calls him a coward, which she says is her word for a guy who's afraid to face the fact that he's gotten his girlfriend pregnant. Thanks to Janie for the scenes.

Jenna Finds Felicia Passed Out at Home; Lorna Accuses Felicia of Drinking Again

Jenna goes to Felicia's to see her and finds her passed out on the couch. Jenna thinks that Felicia only fell asleep and, after several attempts to rouse her, finally manages to get Felicia to wake up. Once she's awake, Felicia, obviously hung over, lies to Jenna that she fell asleep because she was jet lagged from her trip to London. Jenna tells Felicia she's been trying to call Felicia all morning, but the line was busy. That's when Lorna pipes up that the phone was off the hook, and then hangs it up. After Felicia sends Jenna to get her coffee, which Lorna declines when Jenna offers some to her, Lorna tells Felicia that she thinks Felicia is drinking again, and contrary to what Felicia thinks, it IS a problem. Thanks to Janie for the scenes.

Felicia Argues With Lorna, and Then Lorna Argues With Jenna

Felicia insists that she is not an alcoholic, but Lorna isn't buying that. Lorna asks Felicia what would have happened if Felicia had hit her head on the way down when she passed out dead and drunk, and no one had found Felicia? Felicia already almost killed herself in the fire at KBAY. Lorna points out that Felicia drinks when she is alone, when she is upset, when she is stressed out, because people like Rachel Cory are making Felicia's life more miserable than it already is. Felicia makes promises that she's not going to drink again and then breaks them. "Ask any AA member," Lorna concludes. "They've heard this song and dance before."

Felicia replies that Luke was dead, her book was overdue, and the ratings for her television show went into the toilet. So yes, Felicia had a few, and for a while it helped. Lorna can't blame Felicia for that, can she? Lorna asserts that she is not blaming Felicia; she wants to help Felicia. Felicia tells Lorna she has a lousy approach. Lorna asks why Felicia is lying to the people who love her. Felicia replies that it didn't happen to Lorna. Lorna's husband wasn't murdered, and everything that she worked her whole life for isn't suddenly taken away. When that happens to Lorna, THEN Lorna can judge Felicia. Lorna insists that she is not judging Felicia, she just wants to help her. Felicia says that if Lorna keeps hassling her like this, Felicia's next drink is going to have Lorna's name on it.

Jenna returns with Felicia's coffee then, and Felicia thanks her. Noticing the tension between her mother and sister, Jenna asks if everything's all right. Felicia and Lorna both say it's fine. When Felicia leaves to get dressed (even though, as Lorna points out, she is already dressed), Jenna demands to know what's going on between Felicia and Lorna. Lorna tells her they have other things to discuss, like the bun in Jenna's oven. Jenna wants to know how Lorna found out and is angry when Lorna says Dean told her, even though Lorna emphasizes that she had to pull it out of Dean because he was upset. Lorna then accuses Jenna of not really being pregnant. Thanks to Janie for the scenes.

Lorna, Jenna, Rachel, Felicia--Arguments Abound

Lorna and Jenna argue after Lorna accuses Jenna of faking her pregnancy to try and derail Dean's career. After hearing about the home pregnancy test that came up positive, Lorna backs off of Jenna and tells her that Dean spent the night at D&M and that he was headed home to see her. Jenna leaves just as Rachel arrives. Rachel tells Jenna she's doing a great job hosting Felicia's show. Jenna tells Lorna to be nice to Felicia, and then leaves.

Felicia emerges from the bedroom then, and is surprised to see Rachel because she doesn't remember having called Rachel the night before even though Rachel tells her that she did call Rachel. Rachel tells Felicia they talked for quite a long time on the phone last night. Felicia again tries to pass it off as jet lag and asks Lorna where Jenna is. Lorna tells her that Jenna had to leave. Felicia asks if Rachel has had a chance to read Felicia's novel yet. Rachel says that she's about halfway through and will give her a review when she's read the whole thing and has a better sense of the story. Felicia asks Lorna to keep Rachel company while Felicia changes out of her robe and then leaves the room.

After Felicia is out of the room, Rachel tells Lorna that she's worried about Felicia. Felicia had nothing really to say last night and now she's hyper. She asks if Felicia is drinking again. Lorna replies that she thinks Felicia is, and then Lorna says it's Rachel's fault. Lorna reminds Rachel that she told Rachel that something bad would happen if Rachel didn't give Felicia back her show. Rachel replies that something worse could have happened if she did, and that every decision she has made lately has been in the best interest of Felicia, her friend. Lorna then accuses Rachel of only seeing Felicia as a business investment, but since Felicia no longer works for Rachel then Rachel can leave, because Felicia doesn't need a friend who's going to backstab her. Rachel says that she has given Lorna a pass on things like taking advantage of Matthew and almost trashing D&M because Lorna is Felicia's daughter. Lorna sarcastically says that makes Rachel a saint, and tells her that Felicia has her family to take care of her. Rachel says that Lorna is so busy blaming her for everything that she's pushing away the one person who can help Felicia: Rachel. When she returns, Felicia is unhappy that Lorna and Rachel have been arguing. Rachel asks Felicia to have lunch with her tomorrow, then leaves. After Rachel is gone, Felicia wants an explanation from Lorna, but Lorna wants an explanation of her own for the empty liquor bottle she found under Felicia's couch, which she is now holding up so Felicia can see it for herself. Thanks to Janie for the scenes.

Lorna and Felicia--If You're Not Gonna Talk to Me About Your Drinking, Find Somebody You Can Talk To

Felicia tells Lorna that she had a couple of drinks last night, but that her new agent and an associate of his came over last night and they finished the bottle. Lorna calls Felicia's bluff by asking for their phone numbers so she can verify this. Felicia refuses, and tells Lorna she's through defending herself to Lorna. Lorna replies then she guesses she'll go to work, gathers her things, and heads out, stopping only long enough to tell Felicia to find somebody she can talk to about her drinking problem if she won't talk to Lorna about it. After Lorna is gone, Felicia calls Franco at TOPS and lies that she has guests coming for lunch and she forgot to buy the wine, and thanks him for sending down a few bottle of Cabernet. Thanks to Janie for the scenes.

Dean and Jenna Talk for the First Time After Jenna Tells Dean She's Pregnant

Jenna arrives home from Felicia's, and Dean is there. Dean apologizes for taking off the night before. Jenna asks him why he did it. Dean replies that he didn't know what else to do. This is a lot to think about. Jenna asks why Dean told Lorna Jenna is pregnant. Dean replies that he needed someone to talk to, and it just came out. Jenna's had a lot of time to think about this, and Dean has had zero. Does Jenna think that just because she explained why she didn't tell Dean right away that made it okay for him? He didn't want to have to hear that news from Jenna's ex-boyfriend, and it all came down on his head. Dean tells Jenna she shouldn't shut him out. Jenna tells Dean she's sorry, really sorry. Dean says he is too, and they embrace. Thanks to Janie for the scenes.

Dean and Jenna--I Love You, and Whatever Happens, We're Gonna Work This Out Together

Dean and Jenna declare their love to each other, and Dean tells Jenna that whatever happens, they're going to work this out together. Dean asks if the clinic confirmed Jenna's pregnancy, and she tells him she didn't go yet because she wants Dean to go with her. Dean likes that, and says that after they go to the clinic, they'll just take it as it goes. Jenna and Dean discuss how their own biological parents were lacking--Jenna's mother paying the nuns at the convent to take care of her and never really being there for Jenna when Jenna needed her, and Dean's dad not being what you'd call a good role model or anything. They want to be better parents to their child than the parents they had. Dean tells Jenna she's not in this alone, and assures her that she didn't let anybody down. Jenna thinks that having a baby is the last thing Dean needs right now, and she wants to be happy about the baby. Dean tells Jenna that he wants to be happy about the baby too.

Dean then gives Jenna the present he got her the night before, which she never opened: it's a star for her dressing room door. Jenna loves it. Jenna fears the baby will get in the way of Dean's career, but Dean disagrees. All Dean knows is that this is happening because of all the love he and Jenna have between each other, and as long as that doesn't stop, everything will be all right. Thanks to Janie for the scenes.

Cass and Frankie, Douglas and Christy 1993--Christy Makes Douglas Lie to Frankie for Her

Frankie calls Christy at home, but she refuses to come to the phone and tells Douglas to tell Frankie that she has gone to the hospital to pick up his medication, so he does. Frankie asks Douglas to tell Christy that she called when Christy gets back. Frankie then tells Cass that Christy doesn't want to talk to her, and she doesn't believe that Christy is really at the hospital like Douglas said.

At their house, Douglas stops Christy from going to the hospital by asking her why she had him lie to Mary Frances. Christy finally tells Douglas about the night before at TOPS, her outburst after Felicia contradicted her wedding plans for Frankie and Cass with Felicia's own ideas. Christy says that Felicia caught her at the wrong time and she lost it and had a little blowup. Douglas says that maybe the problem is that Christy has been trying to create the perfect wedding for Frankie and Cass. Christy retorts that Frankie deserves a perfect wedding, everything the way it should be.

Then comes the eye opener: Douglas says that Christy wants to give Frankie the wedding that Christy wanted and didn't get to have. Douglas would have done anything to give Christy the wedding of her dreams. Douglas asks if Christy has told Frankie what their wedding was really like, and Christy says no, she hasn't. Douglas asks why Christy is lying to Frankie; she can be trusted with the truth because she is Christy's friend. (I don't know about the rest of you, but now I'm REALLY wondering what Christy and Douglas's wedding was like, since it obviously wasn't the botanical gardens, dress by a Broadway designer, Douglas in tails affair that Christy has been trumpeting it as all this time.) Christy says that Frankie seems to be Douglas's friend now as much as she is Christy's. Douglas tells Christy he will not steal Frankie away from Christy. Douglas tells Christy that he asked Frankie to continue to be a wonderful friend to Christy after Douglas is gone. Christy says that won't be for a long time yet. Douglas assures Christy that Frankie promised that she would stand by Christy after Douglas is gone, saying that it is a given that she'll be there for Christy. Christy asks Douglas if Douglas is sure he and Frankie only talked about the future. Douglas assures Christy that the future was the only thing he and Frankie talked about. That begs the question, what, exactly, is it about her past, besides the truth about her wedding to Douglas, that Christy doesn't want Frankie to know? Thanks to Janie for the scenes.

Cass and Frankie 1993--The Harmony of Our Souls

Frankie tells Cass that Christy is avoiding her. Cass says that Christy is probably embarrassed about what happened at TOPS and to give her time. Frankie wants to help Christy, but Cass points out that Frankie can't help Christy if Christy doesn't want Frankie to help her and reminds her how long it took for Christy to tell Frankie about Douglas's illness. Frankie thinks this is still about Douglas's illness, that Christy planning Frankie and Cass's wedding is too much for Christy because it reminds Christy of when Douglas was healthy. Cass asks Frankie if she has noticed that the more they get involved in Douglas and Christy's lives, the more agitated Christy becomes. Frankie asks if Cass thinks there's a connection. Cass says one thing comes to mind: Frankie's friendship with Douglas. Christy was very upset that Douglas wanted to talk to Frankie alone last night, more so than she let on. Frankie is surprised that Christy might be jealous of her and Douglas, and tells Cass that she told Douglas to include Christy in their talk last night but he wouldn't. Cass has tried to explain to Christy why Douglas wants Frankie to ensure that his final wishes are carried out, but Cass doesn't think Christy heard him. Frankie says that Douglas feels very strongly about this, and she has to make sure Douglas's wishes are met because she promised him they would be. Frankie then decides to go and talk to Christy. She'll do what Douglas wants as a friend, but Christy has every right to be involved. Cass asks Frankie what she'll do if Christy isn't there. Frankie replies that she'll talk to Douglas, and then he'll talk to Christy. Cass tells Frankie that his first appointment isn't until the afternoon, so he'll swing by the hospital, and if Christy is there, he'll tell her that Frankie really needs to talk to her. Frankie tells Cass that would be great and gives him a quick kiss. Cass stops her from leaving to give her a longer kiss, and then to give her a piece of paper in the shape of two hearts joined together. Frankie opens it, and the following is written inside:

"In 26 days, we will declare to the world what's in our hearts: our love, our commitment, and the harmony of our souls." Cass asks if that's all right, and Frankie tells him it's all right and they embrace happily. Frankie says she got something for Cass too: she got them dancing lessons so they can learn the traditional dances like the foxtrot and the mambo and the tango and the one-step and the two-step. Cass is game as long as he still knows his left foot from his right when it's over and remarks that Christy's idea about a traditional wedding has really gotten to Frankie. Frankie says that it has tapped into some little-girl fantasy she had hidden away somewhere. Frankie worries that Felicia might be upset that they aren't using her ideas for their weddings, but Cass believes that she'll understand, even if she is disappointed. Cass asks Frankie how Felicia seemed when Frankie saw her last night. Frankie replies that Felicia was a little too 'on' for her, but she thinks Felicia is getting better. Cass says he thinks Felicia is working really hard to overcome this whole ordeal. Thanks to Janie for the scenes.

Christy Has Flashbacks, and Then Cass Finds Her, 1993

At the hospital, Christy talks with Dr. Beckett, who wants to run more tests on Douglas so that they can find a medication that will alleviate his symptoms and make him as comfortable as possible...only Douglas doesn't want to come in for more tests, at least in part because he agrees with Frankie's New Age, spiritual approach to healing, which Beckett dismisses as unproven, saying that Douglas could well be rejecting the real help the hospital can give him. Christy says that Douglas is very stubborn once he's made up his mind, but she wants him to live as long and as comfortably as possible. When someone on a gurney is rushed by, Christy zones out and flashes back to when she herself was being rushed down a hospital corridor on a gurney as a doctor yelled that she was going into shock and they had to hurry. Beckett startles her back to reality and, thinking he offended her because of his rough-around-the-edges bedside manner, apologizes. Christy assures him she's all right and tells him that she'll talk to Douglas. Beckett gets beeped but gives Christy Douglas's medication before leaving to answer his page. After he's gone, Christy has another flashback--she's still on the gurney being rushed down a hospital corridor, but she can hear herself reciting what seems to be lines from a play in a voice that is out of it, fading in and out, and this time Cass is the one who startles her back to reality, and he startles her so much that after telling her he came to the hospital looking for her, he has to catch her before her knees buckle. Just what secrets is Christy Carson hiding? Thanks to Janie for the scenes.

Frankie and Douglas Discuss Christy, 1993

Frankie goes to the Carsons' and only Douglas is home. She brought him a refill on his herbal tea, one of her special brews, and Douglas invites her to stay and have a cup with him, telling her that Christy is still at the hospital. Frankie tells Douglas she's very worried about Christy, and Douglas replies that he is too. Frankie tells Douglas about how angry with her Christy got when Frankie told Dr. Beckett that Douglas's health and treatment are Douglas's business, and then later at TOPS, she blew up and really overreacted to Felicia. Douglas tells Frankie that Christy told him about what happened at TOPS and that she's very embarrassed about it, but that Christy is very passionate about weddings. Frankie thinks this means that she and Cass are right about the wedding getting to Christy because it reminds her of how things have changed for her and Douglas. Frankie tells Douglas that she is considering asking Christy to be less involved with the wedding in order to relieve some of the pressure, but she won't do that if Douglas thinks it would make things worse. Douglas replies that Christy really wants to put last night behind her; he just hopes that she can.

After they have tea, as Frankie is getting ready to leave, she tells Douglas that she signed up for an Ethics course this semester and she may borrow a book or two from his library. Douglas replies that he has many books on the subject, which is one of his favorites. Frankie and Douglas agree that it's a shame that the people who need to understand ethics don't pay any attention to it. Douglas says that he and Frankie are a lot alike, which is probably why Christy is so drawn to both of them. Frankie compliments Douglas, saying he's brilliant and strong, but he tells her that he offers Christy a certain stability, and Frankie agrees that's part of it. Frankie tells Douglas about her 14th birthday present from Christy: an earthenware jar for Frankie to put her dreams in, and if she screwed the lid on tightly, the dreams would stay in there forever. Douglas says that Christy will always need to rely on someone with strength and substance, and he hopes that after he is gone, Frankie will encourage Christy to find another man who can give her that. Frankie replies that she's sure Christy won't even be able to think of another man for a long time. But Douglas says that life will call to Christy and she'll reach out to it. Frankie realizes Douglas is worried about who Christy will find. Douglas replies that he won't be worried if Frankie is there to guide Christy. He only hopes that Christy will listen to Frankie. Thanks to Janie for the scenes.

Cass and Christy Talk in the Park After Leaving the Park, 1993

In the park, Cass brings Christy a hot dog, which she promptly drops on the ground. Cass tells her he'll get her another one, but he doesn't think lack of food was the reason she spaced out at the hospital. Christy says that she was talking to Dr. Beckett about Douglas's prognosis, and it wasn't anything she doesn't already know, but sometimes it hits her more than others. Cass wishes there was something he could say that would make things better for Christy. Christy says that almost every time she gets into a jam, Cass is there to rescue her, and she's lucky to have friends like him and Mary Frances. Cass tells her that he told Frankie that he saw her at the casino but he didn't tell her that Christy almost gambled away Douglas's grandmother's brooch. Cass assures Christy that Frankie wouldn't say anything about that even if she did know. Christy insists that Douglas can rely on her. Cass holds Christy's hand to comfort her. Christy says that a lot of people don't understand why she's with Douglas. Cass replies that they just don't know her very well, do they? Christy says Douglas has done so much for her, and she depends on him so much. Then she says Douglas will be really worried about her and she'd better go. Cass offers to give her a ride, but she tells him she has her car, and she's just going to go. Thanks to Janie for the scenes.
