Never Too Old For Poison Ivy!!!

Postby Judy on Sat Jun 28, 2008 3:44 pm

Hi All!!

Being a good Mom, I was helping my son-in-law plant some flowers out at their property where they will be building a home in the country, two days later, guess who has poison ivy rash!!? Now my son-in-law gets it seriously most years, but not this time, I had to be the one! There is no end to the remedies for this nasty stuff, I was so amused by some of the ones I have found online. I really shouldn't complain, there are some really nasty pictures on these websites of some really severe cases.(How many times can I use really in a sentence!!) LOL!! Seriously, I haven't had poison ivy since I was a kid. But believe me, it doesn't feel any better. I have decided I like to walk in the country much better in the winter than the summer. Then I have long sleeves and long pants on!! Hope everyone is enjoying their summer!! Take care, Judy Weston Pilger "71"

Hey Judy! Since you already have poison ivy how about coming down here and taking care of mine? My back yard rises at a 45 degree angle and about 10% of it is covered in poison ivy. I refer to it as my poison ivy garden. It is hard enough to mow without the added ivy. I really do only mow it about 2 or 3 times a year.

Lucky to say I have never had poison ivy. But, boy, if my son, Damon, gets it, there is no reason to even put any cream on it. He always has to have an antihistamine shot. The oral stuff otc doesn't work. Poor thing. There have been times I thought he would just pass out and end up in the hospital!

Now, Mitch, if you would have asked me to come help you landscape, I might have considered that!! You never tell someone what they would be getting into!! LOL! I think I am on the downhill side, part of this stuff is clearing up. How is your son doing? Mine is off to Fort Knox tomorrow, something about convincing new cadets to go the field artillary route. The high point is that 13 hour bus ride or maybe it will be playing with the new guns. They left the ones from their post over in the sandbox. These big boys have never been fired. From my son's house you can hear them firing the cannons on the range, rattles their windows.
Cheryl, I certainly feel for your son. My brother is allergic to the dreaded ivys and insect bites. He would swell and have to go to the hospital immediately. He lives in the country in Missouri and his wife does most of the mowing I think. (Riding, of course!) I will take my flower gardens here on the edge of town and just enjoy my visits to the country. I will most certainly be more watchful this summer! Judy

Judy,

I had to go ahead and cut down the ivy myself. I do have a mild case of poison ivy. But not as bad as has been in the past. I went to extreme lengths to try and not get it. My wife even has it and she wasn't out there. I guess she got it off my clothes or something, even though we tried to be very careful. She says that is not the anniversary present she had in mind.

Mitch,
I hope you went to the doctor and got steroids! My grandson, 4 1/2, got poison ivy last Saturday and I told his mom take him, don't make him feel like I did. He started taking prednisolone and it started clearing up right away. That stuff is just plain nasty, I hope they get their property cleared and sprayed. When was your anniversary? Next year you will have to come up with a better present!! Take care the summer isn't over yet!
