Itunes Sells 5 Billion Songs Note to the Mods: Sorry if this is totally off topic!

The official "Apple.com" article reads that Itunes.com has sold over 5 billion songs online. Since the invention of Bit Torrent, I seriously didn't think people actually paid for songs online.
I seriously can't understand how 5 billion people agreed to pay $1.99 for each song when in fact they could have just as easily gone to Mooza.com - Free Mp3 Music Search Engine and downloaded the music for free. I mean who pays for what they can get for free?
My question: Is it me that is crazy or the 5 billion other people who live with me on this earth?
