So I was driving to work and I saw an old GT Performer (late 80's early 90's I really have no clue) with mags in a trash heap so I had to pick it up. What are some good ways of removing the nasty rust from its frame. Also whats good for cleaning those sweet plastic mags off. I really dont want to put any modern parts on it so im trying to just clean it up. Any other suggestions throw em my way.

brass brush that looks like a tooth brush from a hardware store and soak the mags in wd-40 then seal in a plastic bag over night.

if the frame is chrome, use oxalic acid. Soak it until the rust flakes off/dissovles. It's amazing how much chrome is left. Don't scrape it, steel wool it, or use a metal brush as you may scratch the chrome. Let the chemicals do the work first.

I bought Savogran Wood Bleach at Lowes which contains oxalic acid. Mix it into water, you have to experiment as to how much. Don't breath it in, and don't let it set on your skin too long (or at all - use gloves) My wife had a plastic container used for wrapping paper storage that was a perfect size for a BMX frame. (she wasn't so happy about me putting toxic chemicals into it.)

vintagebmx.com has a lot of info on restoring stuff. Here's the thread:
