is the distance from the flange to the nut the same on the drive and non-drive sides? (do you have to dish the wheel when lacing it?) |

Chances are the distance from the flange to the nut is going to be different on the drive and non drive side. This combined with the possibility of a different size flange on the hub means that the spokes will probably have to be different lengths.
What are you planning on building, maybe I can help you out? _________________ Nicholas Rauch

oh yeah I was thinking of that before too...
just thinking of doing up a set of cassette wheels so I could run 25/9 gearing. WTP gray casstte hub, double butted spokes, Odyssey Hazard lite rim. Oh yeah I'm spending a lot of money in my mind right now... but will it make me ride any better.. don't think so! |

I don't know if you will like the smaller gear set up. I read an article about how smaller gears aren't safe enough with the amount of force / pressure that adults or some teens can put down during racing. Riding park is a different story.
The only thing you are saving is weight.
I believe there was a link on news in a gearing post.
I will look for it. _________________ Bye for now,

Yeah,
Are you talking just for your park bike? If so I think it will be fine, but if you are talking about your multipurpose ride, then I would throw that the bad idea pile. I would say you would be safe running a 39 or 36 up front but I wouldn't go much smaller. _________________ Nicholas Rauch

park bike
mainly due to style now. But yeah weight and clearance too. But with 39/14 now I clear most anything, and if you can ride somewhat clearance isn't an issue anyway |

Well, if it's going to be a park bike you should be alright with the small gearing. You're not a big guy. I would still be wary of going really small. I would say run a 28, 30, 33 somewhere in there. I wouldn't go down super low, especially if you're running 14mm axles. I have seen plenty of drivers blow up because the bearings between the 9 tooth drivers and a 14mm axle are about the size of the ball on a ball point pen (might be a slight exaggeration, but not much). Anyway, if I find myself riding a whole lot out there I might have to get myself something. _________________ Nicholas Rauch

Now I might be mistaken, but I am 99% sure about this, on profile hubs, the driver bearings are the same no matter if you are running a 9 tooth driver or the universal 12-20 driver that uses cogs.
BTW - Untill I got my answer wheels, all I had been running since early 2000 was profile wheels and I still have my 1st set of hubs on my beater bike, and I have never replaced the bearings, just swapped out for a smaller driver within the past year, OG driver was still running as smooth as the 1st day I had them. |

I wasn't speaking about the Profiles specifically, but I can see how they would be more durable.
It doesn't take a rocket scientist but a lot of companies screw it up. _________________ Nicholas Rauch
