Is there a formula for determing the best bar width? or is it strictly trial and error? is wider better? or if your hands are wider than your shoulders is death certain?
Thank you |

Shoulder width plus fist width to each side.
30 inches is the sanction limit per the rules.
I run 27 1/4" _________________ And to think a doctor told me I could be in a wheel chair in as little as 4 years. |

so what are the advantages and disadvantages to wider? I had my bars at like 24 or 25 " and felt in control a little better. Am I a girl? obviously it is easier to narrow bars than to add width...does a wide stance take a lot of getting used to? how long should I try it before I cut them down if they are uncomfortable? |

I used to run 23.5 bars.
Coming from that stand point you will know for sure when the bars are just too wide.
A lot of bars come stock 28 wide and for me thats over the top.
I really like 27 myself but after a shoulder dislocation a few years ago 27.25 was as narrow as I could go for some time and remain in control.
Honestly, when it comes to power there isn't much control with bars smaller than 26.
Not at our ages. _________________ And to think a doctor told me I could be in a wheel chair in as little as 4 years. |

Supposedly with wider bars you have more leverage. I'm pretty small so I like them narrower and have cut every pair of bars I've owned.
The United's on my street bike come pretty narrow so I didn't have to cut them, but that's another story.
Basically go with what you feel comfortable with... but measure twice (or 10X) and cut once! |

I'll check when I get home and let you know.
But as a note, my hands are right on the flanges when I ride. On the new bike I just built I cut the flanges off to fit the grips on, that might take some getting used to. |

In racing going with a wider bar is better for power.
Riding park I have seen alot with narrower bars.
So if the standard now for racing is 28", then going with like a 26" bar will work great for your trick riding. _________________ Bye for now,

My S&M cruiser bars are cut to 25 1/2, Premium Lites on the Standard 20" are 25", the United Trinity's on the Hoffman are 24 1/2", and the Redlines on the Robinson are 26" |

It seems like trends are reversed lately.
My brother tells me the park and street guys run them stock - wide.
On the race bikes it seems like a lot of guys are chopping a bit off. I would say shoulder width. I run mine stock, 28" uncut. Those are S&M Slams.
Just my thoughts. _________________ Nicholas Rauch

I ride the stock S&M slams too, 28 inches. I ride with my hands towards the insides of the grips. The bars on my cruiser are something like 25.5 and I hold the bars with my pinkies almost off the ends of the bars _________________ Ross Wooding

Thanks for all the input guys. I think I will try my bars at the uncut length for a little while and see if I feel any tremendous difference.. |

Yeah, I use the pinky on the end of the bars. It's more difficult now that ODI changed their bar ends! What's the deal there? I loved the old bar ends - fit in your hand so nice. Now it's those little discs that rip the grips in half when you hit the ground - lame! _________________ Nicholas Rauch
