I am not very familiar with the bike world. My son is asking for a Tony Hawk BMX bike for his birthday. I figure it is good quality since it has the Tony Hawk name on it, but has anyone tried one? |

Hmm, didn't know Hawk was making bikes now too. From a quick look on the web they appear to be decent entry level bikes.
If you give us a budget and the type of riding your son does we might be able to make some other recommendations too. |

One of his friends has one and rides it all the time...it looks like it is built good. Since he goes riding with his friends and I don't really know much about bmx...I don't know what kind of riding he does. I would rather not spend more than $400. |

Don't know much about the Hawk bikes other than what's online; the Huckjam series is your average dept store bike and the Signature Series is (supposedly) a higher quality bike.
For $400 you can buy a pretty nice complete bike from a BMX only company.
Then again if he's asking for the Hawk bike that's probably the best thing to get him |

There is nothing wrong with department store bikes...especially for kids who probably wont even ride them after a year. The Dead End Signature Series bike (http://www.huckjambikes.com/ss/products.php?item=8529-52) is the one he wants. Not knowing much about BMX it seems like a good bike for him at only $299 |

This is a BMX specific forum and you're going to find that most if not all of us are pretty biased against dept store bikes
Seems like a decent enough bike with chromoly frame and fork and alloy rims.[/quote] |

If he is into bmxing, support an actual bike company. Tony Hawk is a skateboarder that thinks his name will promote huge sales in the bike industry. Why support a boarder that quite frankly doesn't know much about the biking industry?
If you want a dept store bike, look at the Diamondback brands.
Just my opinion. _________________ Bye for now,

It seems like all the kids these days are riding around on Tony Hawk bikes. He seems to like the fact that it has the Tony Hawk name. I have looked into other bikes, but he doesn't seem to be fond of any others. I think the Tony Hawk name will be good for selling bikes...they will probably do well since he is a big name. |

Tony Hawk doesn't financially support the bmx racing community or bmxing as a whole. His frames are sold for his financial growth only.
If your son wants a Tony hawk bike, by all means get him what he wants.
Us BMXERS support eachother to insure that our sport will be around for a long time, that's all. _________________ Bye for now,

Thank you everyone for the help. We ended up buying the Tony Hawk bike for my son..I was happy with how quick it was shipped. Just got it yesterday and he is thrilled. He loves it and is happy that he can ride with all his buddies. I know you all were not fond of the bikes, but I would definitely recommend them for kids. |

nothing better than making your kids happy on their birthday or Christmas. Glad he likes it. What area are you from? Next step is to get him to the track, on some jumps or into a skatepark! |
