alright tryin to figure out the whole 20inch thing fully still.... got cpl ideas so gimmie the corrections... was thinking since indoors are all dirt turns id go with 1.95 front and 1.75 rear holly rollers......... come summer when were on paved turns go to the 1.95 and 1.75 maxxis folding dth tire.... yay nay in the middle? i like microknobbies but wear out so damn quick

I would go with the same tires for indoor and out. Just my preference.

On my cruiser I run 1.85 front and rear. Stock set up from GT. Never changed it.

Race bike is now a KHE park 1.9 front and an intense micro 1.75 rear. I also have a KHE park 1.75 rear that I may throw on come race season.

Not sure yet.

Matt has used micro knobbies for the last 2 seasons inddor and out, rain or shine. 1.75 front and rear this year and 1.50 the year before. We've been having a lot of sidewall problems with them recently. So when the ones on his bike are done, we'll be switching brands.

i run mine at 100psi havent had any sidewall issues... however if it wasnt for the dirt turns id want the maxxis dth folding sidewall tire.... might just get set of microknobies for now and come spring bump up to them

the sidewall problem is they started to fray out. The rubber would delaminate and the cords would be exposed. Then they start to fray out and blister.
Had it happen to a few different sets.

i rock the 2.10 odyssey p-lyte front and a 1.75 holly roller on the back. its wicked smooth and ive never slid and all i run 100 psi in the front and like 80 in the back.

2.1 is hugeeeee. haha nah its your own personal preference. I was using primo dirt monsters for a while. 1.75s in front and back.  now im riding holly rollers 1.75 in the back and 1.95 in the front runnin at 65 psi.

The 2.1 PLyte is such a low profile tread, I think it rides like a Holy Roller 1.95.  That's what I used to ride.  Rolls so smooth and grips in the turns so much better than the Holy Roller though.

Ive never had a prob with the holy rollers. I started on those tires and have never really left em. I tried micro knobbies and they are dumb. spun around alot and as soon as you hit loose dirt, done. and water... no.

i love my microknobbies....... as i try not to ride on sand or mud or water..... just the dirt turns at indoors scare me away from the dth as a year round tire for the 20 and micro knobbies wear so quick id have to be buying so many sets for both bikes.. but they roll amazingly smooth and have great grip on  all surfaces ive raced on.... well catamount wasnt that great i shoulda had some fully knobbed tires on for there

micronoooobies are just another garbage vsi product made uber cheap and with a high price mark up.

from personal experience supercross bluestreak wear out fast.

irc sirens are light and great never had a problem with them.

maxxis holy rollers are good too.

ill pretty much use any tire except intense.

I think this is a great thread to any rookie or novice rider that is looking for some great info !!! I love hearing real info from riders that are serious about racing!!!
My opinion is - mico knobbies are a great tire, but (!) I guarantee anyone running them has to change them atleast twice as much as you would holy rollers! I have tried them a few times and I still keep going back to the holy rollers!!
if you run the micro's you need to be very careful with air pressure. they will split if you run too much air, holy rollers seem to hold up much better if you run 85-100psi. i also have had probs with them wearing out (balding). our race bikes pretty much only run on the track(dirt) except for practicing sprints occasionally.
D-mac you're a big (muscular LOL) dude, so be careful with the micro's and check your air pressure before each race and use quality tubes also!!!
Thats my two cents - but i can tell you Nick and Jeff have more experience working on bikes and seeing tire wear than anybody else!!!

yes i agree the microknobbies to wear quick..... but on paved turns an hard packed tracks they bite like crazy.... however i did notice when air leaked out the sidewall did take an imidiate beating... cny air was around 40 50 psi in my tires and i ran half dozen laps quick b4 i checked it and the sidewalls were wrinkled...... but i dont run them down to far they are cheap enough i bought new ones and put them on b4 woodward..... but even those are now imo worth replaceing although they should be fine though winter and first part of spring..... the dth really intrigues me though just worry about its traction in dirt turns though winter...  may try it and if it doesnt work ill throw on micro knobbies to get me though the indoor season

what is the reason with SUCH a wide front tire... capin nick? i mean heard of running the 1.85 95ish was for better cornering stablity.. this true?

I don't think they make those anymore.  They were way too soft when you were going fast.  The knobs just folded over and onto your head you went.

Dmac,

The bottom line is those knobs don't do CENSORED WORD for you on  any BMX track.  I believe, and if you look at most pros bikes they agree, that anybody should be running something that is close to a slick - like a negative tread situation.  That is why something like the Maxxis setup should be fine for anywhere.  It is a negative tread tire.

The reason you don't need knobbies is because all of our tracks, even the indoor dirt ones, are hard packed.  

So, a knobby tire puts less rubber in contact with the dirt.  A semi-slick, negative tread puts a lot of rubber down against the dirt.

So, for a cruiser, I strongly recommend something like a Holy Roller.  Micro knobbies are probably alright in terms of tread, but the quality is questionable.  As Richie said, they are a cheap tire.  Even installing them I have seen that they don't spin as true.

Now if you get into those Maxxis tires, they should spin perfectly and hold up for a period of time.

Think about it this way Dmac, when we go to the skate park we ride on masonite.  This CENSORED WORD is slick as snot usually.  So, we run an almost slick tire - Path PLytes are on mine, Keagans, Kyles, Jeffs and Mdurgs bikes.  They grip like crazy.  If you went in there with knobbies you would end up falling.

just going to say this about mcrio nobbies. they need replacing about 4 times a year or more.

holy rollers about 2-3 times a year.

they are about equal in cost so lets say you replace micro 4 times a year and holy 2 times a year. thats 4 more tires a year. and lets just say at 20 dollars a tire thats 80 more bucks a year.

and lets just say you race for ten years solid. 80 times 10 is 800 dollars. blown on crap tires.

i think my math is right. hopefully teacher can check it for me Razz :]

as far as microknobbie quality... i have noticed as nick said not perfectly true.... and i actually belamed it on dirt pattern on tire and being an illusion of some sort..... but coulda just been trying to make myself happy with what i saw lol... and the sidewall issue i think has to do with their trying to cut weight by having a thin sidwall and it ends up lowering quality a bit.... without dealing with them more i cant say if its a performance/weight sacrafice or just lack of development and quality.

i do feel comfortable running dth on indoors with dirt turns tho now. and proably get a set for cruiser too if they work well in ohio.... saw alot of people just plain spinning out in corners at xmas and that just  scared me on the traction issue a bit which made me curious about this alot more than i proably could have been.. and ive never truely understood the wider front tire than rear idea

Lessons to be learned here...

I have always used an intense tire. I started in 2003 with a Tioga set up that had sidewall issues. Switched to the Intense Haalo and Hellfire. Loved them. Alway ran them at 70psi. NO sidewall issues ever.

I then switched to the micro-knobbies. The best tire that I have ever used. I have gone through 2 sets in 2 years. The rear definitely wears out more than the front. I change them when I see necessary.

The sidewall issue that Matt had could be due to the fact of not running a good air pressure. Although I did hear that a batch of micro's had a sidewall issue at one point.

I will never run kenda tires again. Tried them at one race and flipped the gate twice.

If you look at the pics posted in mags or online of the races, you will see that there are alot of riders out there, pros included that use the micro's. So they must be a quality tire.

The P-lytes that Nick, Durg, Keagan and Kyle run are a heavier tire. I won't run that on my race bikes.

However, on my race park bike, I am not running the P-lyte like Nick stated. I am running the Animal tires.

On race bike I will try the KHE park tires and see how they go.

Everyone has their own preference, so use what feels best for your style riding.

The DTH M-tread may be the tire for the future from what I am hearing, so I may need to try them out.

Anyways, run what you want and run at the right air pressure, and you should have no problems with premature wear.

JEFFF Your leet!!! haha 1337 posts.  Anywayysss...  The reason so many pros run mirco knobbies is cause the tracks they race at are all big nationals where they are really nicely hard and compact surfaces and VSI sponsors like half of them...  And i think you havent worn them out so much cause you dont race as much as some of the members on here.  I wear out holy rollers 2 times in a year and i only race about half the nationals.

was racing every weekend........ fri and sat...... and would also try to go and practice sunday afternoons at tricity since i couldnt make normal weekday practice times... only missed 1 weekend which was the shoreham regional due to  back being thrown out and other than that only missed races from weather issues
