Let's talk manuals. More to the point: Let's figure out how to get Alex to manual well (Get it? "Manwell?" Oh Alex you card!)
I know about the leaning back thing, I know about the using your legs thing, but still I can't seem to manual all that far.
Help? |

It's all about your body position and of course PRACTICE!
Start out rolling at a low speed. A set of doubles is the way to learn. Let your front wheel roll off the lip of the first double and let your arms fully extend. Pretend they're ropes, DON'T pull up with them, just let 'em hang for now. Keep your weight back behind the seat and your body low, with your knees bent to absorb the lip. As the back wheel dips into the double, start extending your legs back out and coming up with your body. Your arms are still just ropes, no pulling up, but back is okay ( more advanced and is one of the tricks to SPEED manualing ). As your rear wheel is doing this, your front wheel SHOULD be staying up about a foot off the dirt. Too high and you're doin the "loop out dance" too low, and you're going to see the bike shop. You should be mid jump with your legs almost fully extended and your body should be over the seat. As you near the second lip, you're front wheel will want to dip, so you go back to the starting position in a tucked, weight back stance. As the wheel clears ( hopefully! ) the lip, you can push down on the front end to get a little pump down the backside while you suck up the back wheel over it.
AFTER you get that down, and people start recognizing your mad skills, you can start working on early pulling a jump. It's basically the same technique, just a little more advanced, and WAAAY faster.
Setting up, you lift the front wheel at the base of or middle of the face of the jump, leaning way back. As the front end clears you're gonna be pulling back on the bars to get that much lower in body position. You're legs are gonna be doing extra duty on this one so be ready cause it happens in the blink of an eye when done right. They fully extend and retract without the upper body straightening out, and your head should not change height by much through the entire jump. Depending on the length of the jump and the speed you hit it will determine where to pick up the frt end at. When early pulling, you want to set the front wheel right at the very top of the next lip and get back over the front end to pump the backside while you slide under the guy airing it out to impress the ladies.
Any questions, call me, I'll dust off the Quad and come play! _________________ I've learned it takes YEARS to build trust and respect, but it only takes suspicion, not proof, to destroy it. |
