**Please help me pass the word to any new homeschoolers you know.**
The Smoothing the Way of East Texas group will begin for this new
year on Tuesday, August 21, 6:30 p.m., at the home of Gayle Furlong,
6029 State Highway 31E, Murchison (between Brownsboro and Athens).

Smoothing the Way is a support group dedicated to serving first-year
homeschooling mothers. Each month a topic of specific interest to the
new homeschooler is offered. Veteran homeschooling moms and guest
speakers are available to inform and encourage those who have decided
to take on the exciting, yet sometimes daunting, task of educating
their own children.
Our meeting calendar will be as follows (third Tuesday, 6:30 p.m.):
August — Getting Off to a Great Start!
We will discuss general homeschooling issues, the father's role in
homeschooling, and just spend time getting to know each other. Your
spouse is invited to this meeting.
September — Organizing Your Time
Yearly scheduling, daily scheduling, lesson plans, outside
activities, cooking tips, etc.
October — Learning Styles
What is your child's learning style? What is your teaching style?
Understanding these important concepts will help you with many of the
choices you face in educating your child.
November — Avoiding Resistance
Tips for dealing with frustration and avoiding tantrums and tears.
Ways to avoid resistant behavior, and advice for dealing with it when
it does occur.
December — Curriculum Look
Are you totally overwhelmed by the amount of curriculum available?
Spend the evening looking at a variety of material and talking with
the veterans who have used it.
January — Discipleship
This element is so often overlooked as we plan our child's education.
Giving proper attention to Bible curriculum for your home school.
February — Teaching Tips
Teaching phonics to your preschooler... teaching independence to your
high schooler... and everything in between. Don't miss this session
filled with practical teaching tips!
March — Organizing Your Home
Just in time for spring cleaning! Tips on getting your house
organized so school (and life) can run more smoothly.
April — Support Groups
Do you need to belong to a support group? What type of group would
work best for your family? Leave this meeting with your support
system for next year already in place.
May — Graduation Day!
Congratulations! You've survived your first year of homeschooling!
This very special evening will celebrate your victories and encourage
you for the future.
The $35.00 enrollment fee covers the cost of a notebook, attendance
at the 10 meetings, plus many program extras. A limited number of
scholarships are available. Do not let the cost of the program
prohibit your participation!

OK, I have been waiting til STW has firmed up some things. There are many changes this year.
Meetings at my home will continue to be the 3rd Tuesday, 6:30 p.m. First meeting will be August 19th.
Here is the current info on STW. I will be getting some new brochures (I hope soon) to be able to share with folks.
Smoothing the Way is a support group dedicated to serving first-year homeschooling mothers. Each month a topic of specific interest to the new homeschooler is offered. Membership
Smoothing the Way exists to serve the new homeschooler. We offer you information that will make your first year less confusing. We also offer you the opportunity to meet other new homeschoolers who are sharing your experiences — both good and bad! You will meet veteran homeschoolers who can reassure you that these experiences are very normal and can help you to navigate through your first year.
Membership with Smoothing the Way includes the following benefits –
Member workbook with outlines, articles, and resource lists
Monthly webinars covering member workbook outlines
Attendance at local meetings covering member workbook outlines
E-mail list for members hosted by veteran homeschoolers
Quarterly e-newsletter with articles of interest
Special webinars featuring guest speakers on a variety of topics
Teacher ID card
We offer groups in several states and members are encouraged to take advantage of those local meetings. Feel free to attend either the webinar or the local meeting – or both!
Registration fee is $75. Member workbooks for the 2008/2009 year will begin shipping July 15, 2008. Introductory webinars held June 3 and July 1 are open to all current members and will be available for playback by members. Webinars covering the member workbook for 2008/2009 will be held the first Tuesday of each month at 8 pm CST, beginning August 5.

MACHE — Minnesota Association of Christian Home Educators
CHOH — Christian Homeschoolers of Hawaii
Send us the name of your qualifying organization along with your Registration Fee of $65.
Smoothing the Way will benefit you the most if you join by August and attend as many meetings as possible throughout the year. The calendar is designed to address your needs as you encounter them. We do know, however, that people begin homeschooling all through the year. For this reason, you are welcome to join Smoothing the Way at any time! The most important thing is for you to find the support you need to make you a more successful homeschooler.

Just an update...there is no current STW group. If enough people are interested in this program, I will offer classes again for the 2009-10 school year.
Anyone can still register for the on-line version.
And anyone can still call me with questions about getting started.
