Whew, that's a relief. I thought that these guys were just out to squeeze every nickle they could from us. It was just low inventories. I guess when we start getting all that oil from Iraq prices will fall. It was just about the oil wasn't it? Still, kind of funny how all the stations went up to the same price at the same time. Just coincidence I guess.

CALGARY ? Record high gasoline prices last year were due to low inventories and the soaring cost of oil -- and not due to collusion by energy companies, Canada's Competition Bureau said Thursday.

"We found no evidence to suggest a national conspiracy by gasoline companies to coordinate price increases,'' competition commissioner Sheridan Scott said in a release.

"Retail gasoline pricing behaviour in major centres across Canada during this period was consistent with independent pricing actions taken by businesses in response to normal market forces.''

Thursday's comprehensive report is the fifth major investigation over the past 15 years by the Competition Bureau into allegations of collusion in the gasoline industry.

The investigations have consistently found no evidence to show that volatile gasoline costs and price increases were due to a conspiracy to limit competition in the fuel supply.

The recent report also found that before taxes, Canada's retail gasoline prices were lower than most industrialized countries in 2004, including the United States.

Also, the fact that a drop in the world price takes about 2 months to find its way to the pumps because it has to work its way "through inventories", while an increase in the world price is felt at the pumps within a couple of days. Apparently, we peons of the paying public have no grasp of macro-economics. Thank God the big oil companies are not gouging or conspiring. I guess they are as trustworthy as the government. Wink

If a report was released it must be true.
Ahem!

Meanwhile 2-3 years ago in Iraq gas was pumped into your car for 6-7 cents per gallon, that's per gallon not litre!
No there's nothing fishy going on here.

Taxes can't have much of an effect on pump prices. After all, in Ontario for instance, they only amount to about 32 cents per liter.

That's easy for you to say, but most Canucks aren't that good with small figures as we're used to having Billions at a time stolen from us.

Alberta's hoarding all the gas for themselves, forcing us poor dirt farmers in Ontario to buy Arab gas. Sad

Yeah right Boomer, I'm going to be forced to cash in my empties so that I can take the '66 for a spin to the local burger palace. Even worse the old sow won't drink anything less than Premium, which is another 10 cents or more per litre. Thank heavens for TDI Jettas to drive as a necessity.
