I can't be the only one who finds this interesting, can I?

From 1929: The origins of sliced bread.
New Machine Delivers Fresh Bread Loaves Ready Sliced.

Housewives can now buy fresh bread all sliced and ready to serve. Slicing machine is capable of turning out more than 1,200 loaves hourly to be packed in shallow carton and wrapped in waxed paper. Inventor overcame many difficulties in perfecting device.

From 1936: The origins of motels.
You can see the world through a windshield today and live in your own private home each night while you’re doing it. Not the dwelling you started from, of course, but one offering similar comforts, luxuries and privacy.

You’ll find these overnight homes in motor courts, and if you’ve never spent a night in a court cottage, a pleasant surprise awaits you. The motor court is a recent development of the motor age, an individual type of accommodation designed specifically for motorists, entirely unlike any form of “night lodging” heretofore available.

And the price? Three rooms, bath and garage for your car in any good hotel offering similar conveniences would probably cost you at least eight or ten dollars, perhaps more. In the motor court your overnight home costs you from two to five dollars, depending on the size of cottage you require and the number in your party.

"That's the greatest thing since sliced bread"

I have always wondered. What was the greatest thing before sliced bread?

My Dad used to have quite a collection of old Mechanix Illustrated magazines dating back to the mid twenties. If I remember, his collection continued until the magazine disappeared in the mid sixties. I'm not sure what happened to it. It may have morphed into something else or it may have simply disappeared off the store shelf.

I used to enjoy re-reading some of the old stuff - especially their predictions for the future.  Very few of them [if any] ever came true of course, but it was fun to watch them speculate.

When we were tidying up his estate, I rather hoped I could find  a few of them for old times' sake. Alas, not one was to be found. I don't know if he sold them or threw them out or what.
