Rev. John Hagee endorsed McCain on Feb 27th, two weeks ago, McCain said he was “glad to have his endorsement.” even after he had learned off this video posted to youtube in January.

Tried to give the guy (Dionne) the benefit of the doubt. But the article comes across as left-wing self-pity. (I don't know if he himself leans that way.)
"Our loonies don't get the same respect that your loonies get". Or something.
And again - it assumes that left-wing loonies (a category encompassing a very broad range of people), or more accurately - the left-wing loonie in question, has just as valid a viewpoint as the specific right-wing loonies (another broad category) they're being compared to. Invoking that sort of assumptive moral or intellectual equivalence (when it suits) is as invalid as it is a consistent left-wing trait.
Maybe black left-wing loonies who blatantly attack America and its values SHOULD be ostricized more readily than white right-wing zealous ultra-patriots? (Not because they're black, or even left-wing.)
The reality is the dems court the gay/liberal/feminist/union/secular vote and the liberal press is as much to blame for this being a headline as anyone. The reality is politicians have to pander at least a little to the groups that make up the grassroots of their party. I have seen several years of c&ps pointing out how the republicans cater to the religious "right". The scrutiny has always been there, and still the voting public didn't give a shit. The issue now is why the liberals go ape shit when one of their own has a wingnut for a spiritual adviser. For years republicans have been questioned about their position on the beliefs of religious figures who endorse their candidacy. For years they try to distance themselves form said persons without loosing their support. This shit is becoming funny as hell with some trying to use white mans burden to empathize with Wright, the atheist 's and secular crowd looking to paint the republicans as playing by a double standard based on race, and the republicans just laughing their asses off.

What sane person bases their vote on what the candidates preacher says. Personally I could care less what either says unless the candidate whole heartedly endorses it. _________________ 18-1...Looks good on them!!!
Honestly, I saw Hagee (video above) attacking the church itself (the 'apostate church', etc.) in obscure, apocalyptic but theological terms.
Meanwhile, over the last few weeks I saw/heard Wright attacking America itself, and 'white America', blaming America for 9/11, saying it deserved it, etc, etc, to a large audience in very practical terms. (If you believe in that - fine, I guess. But it is certainly inflammatory to an American audience in a time of war after being attacked on its own soil.)
I don't think the two things are comparable at all. I don't see the equivalence. I guess I'm brainwashed.
But the important point lost in this is - it was Obama himself who denounced Wright. No one made him. So Obama is not only condemning Wright, he's also himself one of those 'giving McCain and Hagee a free pass' because... because Hagee is white.?...???
This invented persecution thing is nonsense and goes nowhere fast.
How is McCain getting a free pass when it is being discussed? The reality is the double standard card and the race card are over used and the general public is bored with the both of them. The reality is a white man saying anything remotely close about black Americans would be vilified in the exact same manner.
It also doesn't take a genius to realize that saying goddamn America won't be ignored while goddamning Catholics will have a limited shelf life. Well, maybe the bobblehead press will run with it. HAR HAR HAR Of course we do have the white mans burden crowd we can count on to bring it up "race" on cue. bobble bobble bobble
It could be argued there is a miniscule difference in seeking support from a wing nut preacher who lives half a country away and the wing nut being your spiritual advisor for 20 years. I think Wright has earned the right to say whatever he wants and believe whatever he wants. Hopefully he will be man enough to live with the consequences, specifically the potential damage he has done to his boys campaign. Oops is that a racial comment because I'm an old Christian white man and Obama is more tanned than I? Sorry, I use the expression all the time and if anyone is offended they can kiss my fat white ass. Always ends up with the racist bullshit.

Both lefties and righties benefit from their own peculiar double standards.
JS Woodsworth is one of the patron saints of the Canadian social democrat movement...but who remembers (and who in the media brings it up) that he was virulently anti-Semitic?
Like I say...meh.
Each side is shocked - shocked! at the double standards the other side gets away with while remaining completely blind to their own. _________________ "You can always count on the Americans to do the right thing - after they've tried everything else."
JERRY FALWELL: And I agree totally with you that the Lord has protected us so wonderfully these 225 years. And since 1812, this is the first time that we've been attacked on our soil and by far the worst results. And I fear, as Donald Rumsfeld, the Secretary of Defense, said yesterday, that this is only the beginning. And with biological warfare available to these monsters - the Husseins, the Bin Ladens, the Arafats - what we saw on Tuesday, as terrible as it is, could be miniscule if, in fact - God continues to lift the curtain and allow the enemies of America to give us probably what we deserve.
PAT ROBERTSON: Jerry, that's my feeling. I think we've just seen the antechamber to terror. We haven't even begun to see what they can do to the major population.
JERRY FALWELL: The ACLU's got to take a lot of blame for this.
PAT ROBERTSON: Well, yes.
JERRY FALWELL: And, I know that I'll hear from them for this. But, throwing God out successfully with the help of the federal court system, throwing God out of the public square, out of the schools. The abortionists have got to bear some burden for this because God will not be mocked. And when we destroy 40 million little innocent babies, we make God mad. I really believe that the pagans, and the abortionists, and the feminists, and the gays and the lesbians who are actively trying to make that an alternative lifestyle, the ACLU, People For the American Way - all of them who have tried to secularize America - I point the finger in their face and say "you helped this happen."
PAT ROBERTSON: Well, I totally concur, and the problem is we have adopted that agenda at the highest levels of our government. And so we're responsible as a free society for what the top people do. And, the top people, of course, is the court system.
JERRY FALWELL: Pat, did you notice yesterday the ACLU, and all the Christ-haters, People For the American Way, NOW, etc. were totally disregarded by the Democrats and the Republicans in both houses of Congress as they went out on the steps and called out on to God in prayer and sang "God Bless America" and said "let the ACLU be hanged"? In other words, when the nation is on its knees, the only normal and natural and spiritual thing to do is what we ought to be doing all the time - calling upon God.
PAT ROBERTSON: Amen _________________ "An it harm none, do what ye will"
Not that I agree with this assessment, but I read one op-ed piece that suggested critics of Obama had better tread lightly as they will be painted as racist. Rings true given the response we have seen here. I have to wonder why the likes of Al Sharperton and Jesse Jackson seem to relatively quiet so far.
MM,
That stooges piece you posted would be funny if it wasn't so stupid. However, back in the real world politicians need to be patient with idiots who hold such views, it seems they vote. I would also suggest the these stooges are essentially saying the same thing as Wright, that America brought 9/11 upon itself. The difference being Wright chooses the villain based solely on their skin colour, the stooges judge anyone supposedly of inferior moral character as the cause.

Sorry for the sloppy first run, I was informed at the last second that the little buddha's needed to be driven to school. _________________ " Tell 'em were coming....and hell is coming with us ! "
What double standard is Obama benefitting from? In what capacity is he treated better than McCain?
I'm not going to focus so much on a direct Obama / McCain comparison but I can think of all sorts of double standards Obama has benefited from:
1) "W" was criticized for not having much experience prior to becoming President (a criticism that in retrospect I have to admit has some validity)
Yet, next to Obama, Bush's pre-2000 political resume looks immense. (at least he actually ran something)
Or put another way...if a 46-year old junior senator with 3 years' experience who happened to be a white guy ran for Prez...would anyone, anywhere, pay him the slightest heed?
Let's be honest about it.
2) Democrats and lefties in general have fumed about the "stolen" 2000 election because of the farce in Florida for 8 years now.
Yeah, they say, maybe technically the rules were followed since the Supreme Court made the final call but dammit, the spirit of the election wasn't honored and commonsense right thing wasn't done!
And yet now, we're in a situation where everyone talks about Obama being ahead in the Democratic primary....well, except for Florida and Michigan but we're going to pretend those states don't exist, because technically, they didn't follow the rules....they (GASP) held their primary early!! so you know, Obama is ahead.
Now, imagine the reverse scenario - imagine Obama a bit behind in delegate count, and the DNC said, "well, let's not count Illinois and Wisconsin and Virginia and Georgia because, you know, technically they didn't follow the rules."
Because Florida and Michigan (lots of delegates at stakes, and states with lots of older people, blue collar people, and Hispanics) are roughly the equivalent to what it would be to Obama to lose the above. They would both favor Hillary and would entirely change the game.
I would have to think that if Obama was "robbed" of those states, there would be a tad more of a hue and cry than Hillary has benefited from losing the chance to win Michigan and Florida.
And considering the Democrats are the party of noble outrage at "stolen" elections, I find it very curious indeed that they're all sitting around going "well, technically the rules weren't followed so tough farts, it's not really that important anyway".
3) The SNL skit lampooned Obama's kid-glove treatment in the media far better than I could every describe it (my favorite was when one of the questions to him from the "CNN Panel" was "Can we get you a pillow?") Biting comedy it might have been...but the truth behind the comedy was self-evident.
4) Hillary wins Texas but Obama gets more delegates out of the deal. Huh?
5) the media is currently dumping on Hillary for going into the gutter to attack Obama.
And so she is...but when Bill went into the gutter to attack his opponents, that was OK, because back then he was the cool guy and his opponents were boring old white Republicans, so no one paid any mind to the gutter tactics.
Now Hillary uses those same gutter tactics against Obama, but unfortunately he's the cool guy and the media darling this time...so now the media looks down their nose at the gutter tactics.
I could go on and on, but the point is not to run down Obama.
Point is, he's young and good looking (by politician standards), he's a great orator and most important, he's a black guy from a multi-ethnic background, which is currently the trendiest of the trendy.
So, he's Mr. Cool Factor Overrides All Other Considerations and he's gotten a free ride on the above and lot more. Double standards. But as I say, meh, everyone in politics benefits from some double standards. _________________ "You can always count on the Americans to do the right thing - after they've tried everything else."

Someone noticed why I posted it.
They continued to meet the president after they said it.
Monty
In one of those primaries, I cannot remember which, Obama wasn't even on the ballot, because they didn't count. _________________ "An it harm none, do what ye will"
