Stop Drop And Roll!
First of all, Foxboro Hot Tubs is actually Green Day. A little background to begin.
Their last studio album was American Idiot, a monster hit. It pushed them from being a neo-punk band into respectable rockers. After six or seven albums, they were suddenly huge. What do you do to follow that? Anything you do is bound to fall short, no matter how good it is.
What they did was to create an alter-ego and go back to their basics. They were always heavily influenced by The Kinks, The Who - all the major British bands of the 60's. Foxboro Hot Tubs is a "garage band" doing homage to their idols. Twelve tracks of three-minute rockers straight from your AM radio.
They aren't ripoffs by any stretch of the imagination. They're honest, genuine, respectful bows to the bands that came before them. They apparently even recorded the album on 1/4" 8-track.
Listen to "Alligator" and try not to sing "You Really Got Me".
Listen to "Sally" and hear The Monkees playing "Stepping Stone".
Listen to "The Pedestrian" and try not to see The Who playing, right down to the thundering John Entwhistle bass.
I keep listening to it over and over, grinning to myself. It's a hoot - it'd be a great one to throw on at a party. I give it two thumbs up, just for the nostalgia factor, not to mention the quality of the musicians. They totally nailed the sound of the sixties, right down to the cheesy Farfisa organ. Even the album cover is a laugher - hot chicks dancing in glittery 60's go-go minis. "Stereo records can be played on today's mono record players with excellent results."
Check it out if you're into this kind of thing. |
