Americans are not that stupid as to believe this shit?

Remember what Happened to McCain in 2000? The father of a black bastard child? Kerry in 2004, a proud group of veterans can now no longer describe their military service, because what they did is now a verb.

Sorry, MM, some people are stupid enough to believe that shit.  My sisters, never noted for their perspicacity, have been guilty of forwarding those notorious emails, as have my right-wing Republican aunts.

As for the guy with four flags in his yard who says it's hard not to believe stuff when everyone you know keeps saying it--sorry, even if my best friend forever told me that Obama wasn't born in the United States and was Muslim, I'd ask him/her to show me their sources.

Oh for God's sake.  I had hoped that we were done with dissection of peoples' military service records for good.  As for Wes Clark, he was apparently not speaking for Obama and was expressing his personal opinion, which if correctly summarized in the article does not denigrate McCain's service.  It merely doesn't give his military record special importance as a presidential qualification.  As a matter of fact, I'm not sure experience as a prisoner of war is a positive in McCain's case--he shows moments of unstable temperament that could be indirectly attributable to his imprisonment.

You only get smeared if you let yourself get smeared.  Obama should get smarter if this crap gets his supporters' underwear in a knot.

McCain would probably have won Sth Carolina primary were it not for that Rove drive by smear. It was a deliberate attempt to use a racist state to swing an election. There is no way you can counter a whisper campaign, as I think is obvious from this article.

Pretty much came down to "if my neighbour says it is so, then it must be true". Stupid I know, but it seems to work.

(edited for fat finger mistakes)
