If you're like me, you have a growing collection of CDs and DVDs with backups and all sorts of things. This is a free catalog utility. It scans the discs, then builds a searchable database. It recognizes and categorizes files under Audio, Video, Images and Programs, plus you can add your own sub-categories and descriptions. Reads ID tags of MP3 files, video codecs, and can optionally make thumbnails of every graphic it finds.

Only 3mb and it's free. Nice uncluttered interface, easy to use, and you'll finally know what you have and where it is.

Does anyone have any interest in posting info about those nifty little programs you use that you can't live without? Your favourite Firefox extensions, that kind of thing? Have you gone to Microsoft and downloaded the free Calculator Plus that does metric conversions, for example?

I use Zotero with Firefox for online family history research, definitely can't live without that.  I've also accumulated a number of recording programs such as Freecorder and MP3MyMP3 2.0, which I use to record things from the Beeb.  I also use Clipmarks with Firefox.

Some of my fave Firefox addons:
AdBlock: Does what it says, on 99.9% of web pages I've been to.
Back To Top: an Up arrow and a Down arrow in your Status Bar for quick page navigation to top/bottom of the page.
Customize Google: Fantastic tool. Set tons of preferences for Google and related pages. Blocks Google ads in this forum, for example.
FlagFox: Just for interest, mostly. Puts up a little flag on the Status Bar to show the physical location of the server you're currently connected to.
FlashBlock: Blocks out all those flashing, spinning Flash ads and crap. If you want to see them, you can tell it to show them just this once, or always allow it if needed.

If you really want to tweak Firefox, get the Menu Editor addon. Turn off unused menu items, move things around, disable unneeded things in the right-click menu. Lots of fun.

If you've upgraded to Firefox 3 and don't like the new "awesome" location bar, switch it back to the old look and feel:
Get the Firefox 2 theme and install it.
Get the Oldbar add-on and install it.

Thanks for the tip about Menu Editor.  I love Ad Block--I think it has spoiled me.

Have you tried out the new Google browser?  I am hesitant to try it since I think Google already knows enough about me from gmail.

No, and I doubt that I will. Firefox serves me very well and I have no need or desire to change. I think it only runs under XP right now?

If you use Gmail, there's an addon called Gspace that allows you to turn your 4 GB of email space into online file storage. Put files on there and access them from anywhere or any computer on the net. Might be handy if you were travelling, for example, or use it as a place to store backups.

Do you have a personalized Google page? If you aren't aware, you can log in and create a page of your own, with calendars and news and weather, whatever. Apply themes - I use Beach, which changes colours and also the sun position throughout the day (cool!). All my computers at home or at work use it as my home page. I leave notes to myself, reminders of anniversaries and such. Handy.

I did have a personalized Google page at one time haven't used it for a while.  I may have to revive it.  And thanks for the Gspace tip.  I can always use more online file storage, given that I'm a packrat there as well as elsewhere.

I did have a look at the search engine Cuil created by a Google defector.  I didn't find it particularly stimulating.  I like Firefox a lot.
