I was thinking he would go for Condi Rice.
Palin has even less experience than Obama. Kind of a odd choice IMHO.

DAYTON, Ohio – John McCain picked Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, a maverick conservative with less than two years in office, as his vice presidential running mate Friday in a startling choice announced on the eve of the Republican National Convention.

At a raucous rally in the swing state of Ohio, McCain introduced Palin as the political partner "who can best help me shake up Washington and make it start working again for the people who are counting on us."

"I am honored," she said moments later in her first turn in the national spotlight.

In a fast-developing presidential campaign, McCain made his selection six days after his Democratic rival, Barack Obama, named Sen. Joseph Biden of Delaware, as his running mate.

The contrast between the two announcements was remarkable — Obama, 47, picked a 65-year-old running mate with long experience in government and a man whom he said was qualified to be president.

McCain, 72, chose a 44-year-old running mate who until recently was the mayor of small-town Wasilla, Alaska — and made no claim she was ready to sit in the Oval Office.

It wasn't a point lost on Obama's campaign.

"Today, John McCain put the former mayor of a town of 9,000 with zero foreign policy experience a heartbeat away from the presidency," Adrianne Marsh, a spokeswoman for Obama, said in a written statement.

Unlike Biden, who attacked McCain sharply in his debut last week, Palin was indirect in her initial attempts to elevate McCain over Obama.

"There is only one candidate who has truly fought for America and that man is John McCain," she said as the Arizona senator beamed. McCain was a prisoner of war for more than five years in Vietnam.

Palin made an immediate play for support from Democratic women, mentioning that she followed in the footsteps of Geraldine Ferraro, who was the Democratic vice presidential running mate in 1984.

I was home for lunch today, and just saw this on CNN.  Palin was giving her address, and doing a good job of it.

Possibly a brilliant choice.  Should scoop up a bunch of the disaffected former Hillary supporters.  The big issue of course will be her lack of experience.

She has several children, and her oldest son just recently enlisted in the army.  Scheduled to depart for Iraq next month.  That's poignant.  Her youngest was born this April (!), and has Down's syndrome.

I think it's a really odd choice as well. Just because any woman is on the ticket Hillary supporters will flock to McCain?? I use the word "any" because she has no profile, close to being a complete unknown.

Just think, in a few more years she will match Obama's experience. Strikes me as something a maverick like McCain would do. I can see Rice having a role to play in a McCain administration though.

Here is perfect example of why the McCain = Bush concept is such a load of shit. Anyone with a friggin brain knows there are fundamental differences in Bush and McCain, just like anyone with a brain ignores the Obama is a Muslim mole shower of shit.

At this point those who would vote for Obama just of the sake of voting for a minority can make history by voting for a woman vp with the bonus of not electing a president who doesn't understand the pay scale to which they aspire.

Still leaning towards McCain, but curious to see if Obama is more than the rock star in an empty suit persona that seems accurate to date. I will concede he is seems to be a smart, decent and all around nice guy, but more glitz than substance thus far IMHO.

2 minutes with Google will show that her views are almost the opposite of Hillary's. If you're just voting for a vagina though, she is pretty tasty.

And McCain isn't equal to Bush. He's worse. If you liked Dubya you'll love P. O. Dubya.

I had actually never heard of her until I saw it on CNN, and now that I've read about it, she's an excellent choice. She's young, a woman, a mother and a wife. Her husband is not a Washington insider with years of political baggage and neither is she. There aren't any back-room Washington deals that could come back to haunt her, or political behavior dangerous to the Republican party.

Her appointment as VP makes McCain appear to be more progressive than he would have otherwise have been. If he can have a woman doing many important tasks, then is he really such a bad guy?

To that end, there was an audible sigh when Obama didn't appoint a black woman, a gay, etc to the post of running mate. Joe Biden was the last person they wanted.

The race is matching up.

Not overly, no.

This is really my only outlet though for yapping about politics, so I may have to tolerate you guys until November anyway.

Did I mention that we are having a federal bi-election in my riding right now?   Our liberal MP retired.  The NDP cadidate is Tom King - fairly high profile fellow, but he irritates me.  Still have an orange sign on my lawn, but honestly I am holding my nose a bit this time.
