Well I'm not terribly shy so here goes.  I wonder why no one posts here.  We have this nice little forum with over 200 registered users and there are like...10 posts.  Whassa matter?  Corpus atheists afraid of coming out of the closet?  haha

Met the group at Half Price Sunday night.  Seemed like a nice enough group.  You used mighty big words and talked about strange and novel ideas.  Well, the conversation was pretty good.

So my username is Trooth.  It is also my Twitter name.  Anyone else that twitters or wants to start, just add me to your account.  I twitter with a bunch of atheists online that I know but no one from this area.  It would be cool to twitter with local atheists.

Little bit about my atheism - I searched and searched it seemed for that right spiritual connection.  Never found it.  Then one day we were talking online on a scooter forum, of all places, about how old the earth was.  Some ridiculous creationist was telling everyone the earth was less than 10,000 years old and I knew he was wrong.  I'm no scientist, but shit, you have to be a real stupid ass to believe the earth is that young with so much overwhelming proof otherwise.  I started researching online and ran across a few atheist videos from youtube.  Great I thought!  This makes sense.  And the more I thought about it the more sense it made.   I had just never entertained the idea there might not be a sky daddy looking down on us, taking care of us and answering prayers and such.  Years before this I did start questioning the bible and how most of it seemed so violent and hateful and judgmental.  So it was an easy leap into the great unknown.  Haha.  That's the short version, aren't you glad it wasn't the long version.  For that you have to get me drunk.  Or hyper on coffee.  Either one.    Smile

So someone say something!

My situation was very similar.  It had never occurred to me that it was possible not to believe.  My husband has never been religious so he introduced me to alot of new ideas and...one of the four horseman Richard Dawkins.  I watched a C-Span book reading and listened to the Q and A session and it all made sense...or rather it didn't make sense...lol...Since there is still so much we don't know about the universe.

but blinders are off now and it hurt pretty bad at first but now, I am a well adjusted atheist...thank god. erm. yeah.

Yeah it's a real shame the forum hasn't taken off. If its anywhere near the national average, there should be at least 1800 - 2500 atheists in Corpus! Speak up people!

I guess I got lucky. My mother was a little religious but never enough to drag us all to church. My dad on the other hand was a real "knowledge is power" kind of man. Any question I had growing up was answered to the best of his knowledge. If he didn't know it, we went to the library, found the pertinent books, and learned about it together. Growing up, I met religious people and would ask them questions about what the believed. Most of the time, there answers were just absurd.

I was once told the sky was blue because "god painted it blue!".
Bah!
I corrected my 5th grade classmate and explained that blue light has a longer wavelength and gets scattered in many directions by the oxygen and nitrogen in our atmosphere. This means when we look at the sun, we see yellow/white light and the rest of the sky seems lit up with blue light.
Yeah I was a geeky little kid..

Anyway, as I got older and saw over and over how little these religious folk seemed to know about the world, I pretty much stopped paying them any attention.

Now though, I'm seeing these same people trying to cram this stuff into all sorts of things. Medicine, politics, education, even science! They're having a few successes here and there! What I used to see as just a few poor wackos, I'm starting to realize is a serious threat to our economy, our government, and our species as a whole. These people, with power, can be exceedingly dangerous.

I really like the human race. It's worth whatever time I can give it to make sure our brand of hairless-apes are going to be around for a good long while.

I think there are a lot of people that might fall into that category.

One of the things I have learned in the last few years is - you don't have to make up answers to things you can not explain or understand.  A simple I don't know is much better than trying to make shit up (like a creator god and afterlife) to fill in the gaps.  Such a simple concept, eh.  Smile

Ya I completely relate.  heh.

BTW, a girl I know who is religious told me I must believe in god because I used the phrase "Thank god" in front of her.  I told her, no - old habits die hard and it's just a catchporase.  She insisted it went deeper than that.  Whatever.  Rolling Eyes   Just thought it was funny yet kinda sad.  I'd use "Thank Snarf" but she wouldn't get it.   Laughing

Really?  Wow I was excited to know there were half a dozen beside me.  haha

I think the forum will catch on eventually.

That's cool.  I love living in the information age.  I also think this will be the downfall of religion eventually.  People having access to so much knowledge.  At least I hope so.

Hey - why is such and such this way?  Uh I donno.  I guess god did it.  Unless they are trying to explain a tragedy or something bad.  Then it's the Devil, of course.  I can't stand it when people blame the devil or give credit to god for things all the time.

Ya it's scary and sad.   Sometimes I get very discouraged because of how organized religion is and what a stranglehold it has in the USA.  Especially in our community.  I've thought about packing everything up and leaving more than once.   Canada is too cold but California sounds nice.  It's a good daydream.
