Searched $20 in nickels. Got my first silver ever from roll searching: a 1945-S wartime nickel.
And my first obsolete coinage: a dateless buffalo, which I tossed into the vinegar where I already had one soaking.
Other notable mentions a 1939, a 1940 and several from the 50's. _________________ -Adam |

Great finds! I haven't seen a Buffalo in a roll in recent memory.
I searched a box of nickels today, came out with 20 pre-1959's (my cutoff for saving), but sadly no wartimes. Among them was a 1939, 1940-D, 1951-S, and 1951 in XF which I used to replace the one I had in the album. Also a 1959-D in AU. |

Speaking of searching nickels. I pulled a few of the Jefferson Whitman books down and searched some of the coins in them and found a 1946D over inverted D. Too bad it was F-12. MS-63 is listed in the cherrypicker for $300.00
Don't forget to check for those varieties, not just grade when searching

I have several rolls of pre-1959 Jeffersons from circulation awaiting a variety search, which I will conduct one rainy day soon... |

why did you put the Buffalo in vinegar?
It shouldn't do anything except smell it up. |

Soaking in vinegar for a few weeks brings the date out, and the coin comes out looking better than they do after using nic-a-date. The one I already had soaking is starting to show numbers. _________________ -Adam |

How about some pics. I would be willing to try it, but wouldn't mind seeing what it does to a coin first. And does it matter what type of vinegar? |

I don't think it matters what kind of vinegar. Right now I have them in applecidar vinegar. The one that I've had in it for a couple weeks is starting to show. I can tell the last digit is a 7. I forgot to get before pictures, but I will post the after pictures when they're done. Sorry I don't have any to display yet. _________________ -Adam |

That's cool. I'm going to try it with the one dateless Buffalo I have. If it works, then I may have to go get a roll of dateless Buffaloes and see what I can uncover. |

Just rinse them really well when you are done.
Anyone know how long it takes? |

I have left some for more than a month. I am doing some now that have been about two weeks. Just removed a few and left the others to check in about another week. About a hundred right now. Have found some that look pretty good. Still no key dates though. Maybe on the next check.
Here's one..
