I have about 10 lb. of coins from all over. I know something less than nothen about them so how would you begain to figure them out? I know some one will say Buy The Book. Problem is there is hundards of books and they cost maney maney hundereds of dollors and the coins may be worth very lettle. So if you were going to get just one book to start with what would it be? I have had these coins for years and they look nice but stay in the way . How do even know where a coin is from unless you know the languge? Confused

About a year ago, I got out my big bucket of world coins. The ones that I couldn't figure out on my own I looked up by searching the internet. The ones I still couldn't find, I posted pictures of on a forum. If you can't get pictures, a detailed description will probably work too. There are people here who can help you. Also, I know there is a guidebook of world coins. I can't remember what its called, but I'm sure someone here does. And that would probably be the one book you need to start with.

If you know the country and denomination (which is usually pretty easy), then you can look it up at www.numismaster.com .  You will need to register, but it's free.  It's a great resource for figuring out what you have, but it won't give you mintages or prices.  For that you will need a book or a subscription.

The other option is to scan the coins or take a picture of them and post them here.  Someone here may already have the coin, and if not we enjoy looking them up.

Chris,in my view,a subscription to Numismaster is a real rip-off.They sent me an email offering me a year's full access for US$149.If I had that sort of money,I would buy the coin software from edited instead.

That's why I don't subscribe.  Getting info on the coins is free, getting pricing and mintage is what costs, and since the pricing is so unreliable, I don't miss that, and since mintage figures can be found very easily anyway, I don't miss that, but for simple identification and such, it's great since that part is free.  I do like the looks of the Currency Vault software but haven't had a chance to try it out yet.  Trust me, though, I will.

First off sort them into managble groupings Ie those that you know the country of origin and those that you dont.
Second visit your libery taking some of the coins along, get out the big book on World coins Krauss & go through it sorting the ones you know.
Third on to the unknown  Very Happy  Scan then one at a time or take a pic and put them up for us to look at, even if we cant tell you everything about the coin we should be able to point you at the right country if nothing else  Very Happy

De Orc's advice is right on. The Krause book is the book which I couldn't remember the title of. And if you can photograph, or scan the coins that you don't know about we would enjoy helping you out with them!

Up date on my world coin project:
I have come up with about 25 counterys so fair. I am working to futher identify each of these. I have some that don't use letters like we do and have no ideal of what they may be so I will come back to them latter.
Has any one used http://worldcoingallery.com befor? It seems to work well to help me identify my coins.Latter on I will need some where that tells me more about each coin.

I've used Don's website before to identify coins.  He has an "instant identifier" page that has helped me with coins from Ethiopia and Pakistan in particular.
