Bit of the Banks History

The Stamford , Spalding, Boston and Lincolnshire Banking Company Limited came into being as a joint stock bank with this title in 1880. It carried on issuing its own notes into the early 20th century when it finally merged with Barclays Bank. The Stamford Spalding, Boston and Lincolnshire Banking Company never went bust. When the merger occurred, the whole note issued was honoured by Barclays. To show this had been done each note was given a V shaped cancellation cut over the signature area.

Steve,I am very surprised that there aren't any catalogues that list the private bank notes from the countries of the British Isles. They are a legitimate part of the numismatic history of the British Isles as is the banknotes issued by the other banks such as the Bank of England, the Northern Bank,& the Chief Treasury of Wales Limited are.

Steve,is it like a Pick catalogue, but it lists only English banknotes? It would be cool to find a catalogue that also lists Welsh banknotes & the banknotes from Cornwall that came out in the early 1970's.

Yes,I saw a set of Cornish banknotes a few years back. They were inscribed in Cornish, which is a closely related language to Welsh.

Steve,is that the new issue that has come out recently that has a 100 Quid note in the series? I'm a bit out of touch with Scots banknotes.

Here's a link; www.banknotenews.com .

Steve, those notes are very nice. That vendor doesn't realise that there is a 100 Quid note in that issue. It's a pity that there isn't a 1 Quid note in that issue.I know that the Royal Bank of Scotland Plc. has been issuing 1 Quid notes up until a few years ago.

Please believe me when I tell you that vendor does realise, he has just got his hands on some of the early numbers that were auctioned of by the bank here in London

Steve,it seems odd that they were being offered at auction in London, yet the notes are currency only north of the border (Gretna Green northwards).

It is very interesting to know that the banknote issuers are doing their bit for charity.I know that Spink's are the most famous numismatic auction house in the whole U.K. (if not,the entire British Commonwealth).

I wonder if Richard Lobel from Coincraft will be jumping on the bandwagon as far as the British Isles' new banknote issues goes.
