Here is a new addition to my somewhat chaotic currency collection, courtesy of a generous member of this forum. It is a 500 biletov note, issued in Russia but privately, not through the government.
The obverse shows a picture of Sergei Mavrodi, mastermind, along with a brother and cousin, of an enormous and basically pyramid investment scheme called MMM Investment Group (see reverse of note) that flourished in Russia in the early 1990's. It predictably collapsed and its owners brought to task, though only after years of continued political support to try and 'save' the value of the currency (since some of the powers-that-be were themselves caught holding the junk). In 2003 Sergei and his brother received harsh prison sentences (Sergei has already spent some time in the can in the 1990's but allowed to run his business from there). |

Brad,I had a few of those things, but they were denominated in several thousand Biletov.I sold them to a collector of 'funny money' items - an old friend of mine in Wanganui, who is a retired school teacher.I told her that I wanted NZ$20 for my collection of these. She has a fiery nature,as she is of Serbian descent.I ended up selling them to her for around NZ$10-15.
These are historic exonumia items,as Sergei Mavrodi later became a member of the Russian Duma, albeit,a very corrupt one.

I have a few different ones of those. I got a couple from one source, and different one from another source. I wonder how many others I'll need to complete the set? LOL |

I'll have to go check them out. Steve, you're the one that got me started on them! LOL They're a good set to collect as they're not really worth much, and most people probably don't want them. |
