Hi,
A CoinTalk'er suggested this would be a great forum, so I took him at his word and joined.

My 9 year old son and I recently began collecting. We have having a great time, spend a lot of time together "coining" (he invented the verb). He has gravitated to US coins, me to World, so we are great collecting partners... no competition for the same coin!

Looking forward to meeting new coin collecting friends here on CoinLovers.

Mike

Welcome aboard Mike.  Glad to have you.  What world coins are you currently working on?

Thanks. I'm looking to collect European silver coins minted between 1914 - 1918 (may expand to 19). Right now I'm focusing on

- German Empire, mostly  1/2 marks and marks, but some German States minted silver in 1914 and 15. For example, I just bid on and won on ebay a Baden 3 mark silver coin minted 1914. Very pretty coins.  (see my avatar).

- Russia 5 - 50 kopecks and Rouble. Frankly, I've never even seen a silver Rouble from the period though I think they were minted, and I've gotten my hands on one 50 kopeck from 1914. Some interesting quirks, like some of the 10 kopeks were minted in Osaka, Japan in 1916! Go figure!

- Russia coins minted 1939 - 1945. Interesting period, not all denominations were minted all years (for good reasons!). Not pretty coins but as a student of history they hold a lot of meaning for me. I was warned that while they are not expensive when you find them they are hard to come across. So far I have about 10 or so from the period, and am on the trail of more.

- My son has an Indian Head collection with all gaps (except 's') filled from 1887 to  1909. Many of the coins were purchased in a 'buy this bag' deal and range from AG to VG at best. But we have purchased a few VF and XF. He wants to fill the rest of the collection with at least XF.

- He also has two VERY pretty Peace dollars (1922, 1926s), both coins in the MS62 - 64 range. Since I split the cost (my main role as his collecting partner is financier) he should be able to get a coin every month or two from allowance.

That's about it for now. What about you?

Mike

Welcome to the forum!  Its great to find a hobby you can share with your child.  I don't collect Germany or Russia, but I do from other parts of the world.  If you want to expand your world coin interest, here is a good site to browse and see what catches your eye:

Enjoy
