my sister got me a rock tumbler for my birthday a few years ago. its pretty neat seeing dirty old rocks turn into something shiny and pretty. the problem for me though is it is noisy and i have to keep it in the basement for 2 or more weeks while it it tumbling. it is worth the wait though, you never know how the rocks are going to turn out looking like.

I got started rock tumbling a couple of years ago with one of the inexpensive kits. Ended up investing in a good Thumler brand tumbler with extra barrels. I have a detached garage/shop so the noise isn't an issue. It is really cool to see how the rocks look once they're tumbled smooth. Even common stuff like granite can polish up really nice.

To a geologist, rock tumbling is like what coin polishing is to a numismatist, lol.

Acanthite,
I promise not to tumble any rocks that are valuable.  Wink You wouldn't happen to be a geologist?

Ohh, but they all have sentimental value at least.

Now I'm sure you're a geologist. No one else would attach sentimental value to rocks. lol.
