· Quote

This 10 Bolivar coin was issued only in 1973 for general circulation in Venezuela.  It features the bust of Simon Bolivar, champion of Venezuelan independence (achieved in 1821).  The coin, however, does not commemorate the man but rather this particular portrait, which was designed by the frenchman Désiré-Albert Barre in July 1873, when much of the Venezuelan coinage was minted in Paris.  The portrait has remained virturally unchanged on coinage up to present day.

The coin is unusual in that both sides are convex, with only portrait and coat of arms incused.  Denticles are also incuse, giving the illusion of a normal rim.  Diameter 39 mm, weight 30 g (90% silver).
