I stole this off the beautiful Marissa's website!

Cubi Point Naval Air Station and the adjoining Subic Bay Naval Station in the Philippine was a place where war-weary U. S. Navy and Marine Corps officers, Sailors and Marines could let off a little steam after combat exercises/missions or spending weeks on the gunline aboard ships.
One of the most favorite hangouts of most officers, particularly aviators,
was the historic and infamous Cubi Point Commissioned Officers' Mess Open, more popularly known as the Cubi Officers' Club or simply Cubi O'.
Besides the full service restaurant, the Cubi O' had the Baguio Room (a banquet room), the Main Bar with all the plaques), and the Ready Room.
Here, "an officer and a gentleman" could break windows, trash furniture, have dinner roll fights, parade in the buff in the gardens under the moonlight, swill Cubi specials . . . with some immunity!
The staff uniforms were replicas of "shit hots" or Sierra Hotel flight suits. These suits were worn by many officers, especially aviators, for many dress occasions at the Cubi and Subic O' Clubs.
The cockpit that used to stick out of the wall of the Ready Room has been hammered into an eagle to represent Subic Bay's current "new eagle of Asia" theme.

The name CUBI was taken from the word of an Admiral to the constraction battalion team. Since they are having a hard time doing the runway. He says to the team Can U Built It?......(Roger) |

Hahaha!
I actually read somewhere recently, and didn't know prior, that Cubi was named after Construction Unit Battalion 1 or CUB1 - after the SeaBees that built the base =)
Makes sense, huh? |
