I've been training for the Portland Marathon for about 6-7 months now and was pretty lucky to have avoided cold rainy days.  Now that it's completely crappy outside and will probably just have to suck it up this Sunday, I'm looking for a running jacket that will keep me dry during the wet months and wanted to know if anyone has a particular one that they like to wear while they do their long runs.

I have a Pearl Izumi lightweight shell that I found on clearance that works okay but if I were to buy another one I would buy this one, it is a little on the pricey side though. I don't like anything really heavy because I get so warm and this one is the perfect weight to put over the top of a long sleeve tech shirt.

Thanks!--this one sounds good.  I was looking at some jackets yesterday at a running store and most seemed either too heavy or they were the equivalent to a walmart trash bag.  I'll keep this one on my Christmas list.

I have one from REI that works great, I don't know the model but if you come to the run in the AM I will bring it for you to check out. I think it cost about a hundred bucks but worth it if you run in the winter around here. It has a full zipper,  and a hood which is a lifesaver if it gets really ugly. I had a Montbell for years that I loved, so much that all the Goretex lining finally fell apart and I had to get something new. I still run in it if it isn't too awful wet. As both of you noted, the key in this climate is the lightest weight rain resistant gear you can find.

And the old truism that if you get something water resistant enough that you don't get wet from the outside, you will get wet from the inside, is unfortunately right on the mark. No amount of supposed breathability is enough to pass all the water vapor you create if you are running anywhere close to hard. I have dumped cups of sweat out of the sleeves of my jackets that accumulated in the elbows during a long run. Still, warm sweat is alot more comfortable than cold rain.

Another option you should think about is a vest......I wear them much more frequently than the jackets due to the breathability and overheating issue....it is warm enough around here on most days that the protection to your trunk is enough to keep you warm, and the ventilation of your arms keeps you reasonably cool and doesn't feel like you are inside a sauna.....I will bring one of those along tomorrow as well.

Hope you find something you like.

Wow!!! the marathon was amazing--what a spectacular experience!

I've never been on one the group runs--I'm thinking about coming next week (Oct 20)--right now I'm feeling a wee bit (extremely) sore and stiff. I would love to take a look at your jacket then.

The good news is that it didn't rain on Sunday and I was just overthinking everything the week beforehand--first time jitters I guess.
