I'm wondering have old must male degu be that he is able to fecundate the female? I read they become sexual mature et 8 months till 2 years. Is that so?
Our Beti is about 3 months old and Lili 4 months. Is it possible his jumping on her were successful today??????? He's now yelling so loudly for an hour, so we afraid he would loose his voice!!!! Poor thing!! Is that the SIGN???? Will we be a bigger family or is just a fake alarm???
Thanks, S. |

Degus become sexually mature at different rates so there is no real set time, it is usually between the 6-8 month mark though. I would say from your pictures Beti looks older then 3 months so it could be that he has become sexually mature especially as you heard the mating call. If i was in your position i would treat the female as if she is till you know either way to be on the safe side _________________

Thank you so much for your so veryyy quickkk answer.
Beti stoped yelling, but do you really thing that there was something happened?? How many times must the male have his mating to get her pregnant??
She is with us for only a week (today at 10 pm) and he is bother her ever since. They are arguing, not so much fighting(maybe 10 minutes per day), lying on each other just for the last 2 days; he doesn't allow her to eat at the same time as he does...
How long can mating long? Few days, an hour maybe?? She is still afraid of us; we didn't do yours introductions degu's to each other, and i believe this wasn't wrong ( they kiss and clean ... and fight a minute or 2 a day, but gently...)
We are 24 hours with them and learn, learn..
They are so BEATIFULLLLLL!!!! WE LOVE THEM EVER SINCE WE GOT THEM.
Beti is now not the same as 2 hours ago. Just like he wants to tells us something. He was out of the cage, but not himself . Is he in sock? He is building a nest, tough he is doing that for the last week.
Hura Beti??????????  |

Is maybe now when the mating season started, our Lili more sensible? She bites us, attack us like little solder, strange voices come from her. She is not friendly, I afraid her a little. Ha ha. |

Female degus only come into season (heat) in the prescence of a male and when the time is right. Some people have a male and female pair for years without ever having babies then oneday they will wake up and find 5 new faces peering out at them. It also is coming upto mating season between march and october so degus are more likely to mate at this time of year...
If they have mated it will be too soon to tell if it was sucessful or not. I've never heard of mating changing a degus temperement before only between the pair (for example when the female doesn't want to mate she will give the male a warning). You haven't had Lili long so she will still be settling in, i would give her a little time and keep on working with her and i'm sure she will soon calm down _________________

Hello all!
The time is going by and from the first mating call has been 2 and a half months. Beti and Lili mate often, they get along well and she doesn't bite us anymore. We try to understand her bad mood and than leave her alone.
Now we are wondering:
-her belly is becoming bigger every day and we think she is expecting, all though we are not sure yet;
-she is digging a lot and their nest is larger everyday, all though Beti builds it from first day in their new cage;
-we let them out in a safe room for 2-3 hours every third day - is that very dangerous for her if she is pregnant;
-how long she must be pregnant that you can see that the little one in her belly are moving;
So we are waiting for the signs and preparing.
Thanks for reply and hear U |

Oooohhh how exciting it definately sounds like she may be pregnant especially if she is getting bigger and you have seen them mating plus the fact she is building a nest
Firstly i would treat her from now on as if she is pregnant. I don't think a small amount of excercise out of the cage will hurt her, i wouldn't over handle her incase she is pregnant but the excercise shouldn't hurt and in my experience degus will only do as much as they want when out. Could you give her access back into her cage for when she has had enough?
Degus are pregnant for 3 months and its usually only the last month to two weeks (although it can vary from degu to degu) that you will start to notice small movements and she will really start to show. Some people don't even notice any changes or see any movement so don't be disheartened if you don't, it may be a case of you waking up one morning to find a few more little faces looking at you Its important that you remove Beti as soon after birth as possible to prevent breedback, he can go back in about 3 days and he will help look after the pups
Please keep us all posted as baby degus are so cute _________________

Thanks Kirsty!
When they are out they have access to the cage all the time (a meter big teddy-bear which they jump and pee on - it's soft and so they can't their feet).
Yesterday she lied down on her back and Beti licked and picked her belly.. Lovely scene!!
I'm not excited to take Beti out when she will IF she will have pups. But that's the way it is.
Is it normal that they mating in case she was fecundated months ago?
Is that dangerous for her? Or degus are like us? |

Degus do tend to mount other degus be it males or females its a sign of dominance and often not a sexual act. If Lilli is pregnant Beti may or may not mount her but either way if he is mounting her then pretty soon babies will definately be on the way, i don't think it will hurt her as she would put him in his place if so _________________

So actually you will leave them. We are going also in July only for 3 days and I am wondering how this will turn out?
The babies!!!!!
Like would Steve Irwin said: "Amazing! What a beauty!"
We are pretty sure - 6 is the number. They are magnificent!!!! Very quick - they jump already few centimetres, running, try to eat something else than milk, one is special brave. So funny - big head and feet, like a "dinosaur?
Lili is doing well - tries to get fit again - so elegant and slow in the wheel. Only thing is, she is expecting again pretty sure. Beti is going along with all of them, but when he wants to mate, is creepy. We are afraid than for babies - you know to step on it.
The problem now is - the new cage has too much space between the grates, and the wooden one is too high for little one. Now we are thinking over on new solution...
Look the few pictures-  |

My parents look after them and the chinchillas for me but they sulk when i'm away as they don't get let out the same. I will bring them something nice back
I'm sure Beti won't step on anyone and the babies will soon learn to move out of his way
The pictures are fantastic just been and had a look, what a gorgeous degu family you have _________________
