Very Happy Lilly and Milly have been taking very good care of Lilly's 8 pups.
In fact, I think Milly is in with them more than their mom! Maybe because she's also expecting, she feels she needs the practice!

OK, now for the funny part.
First, let me describe the cage set-up that we have. Since we found out we were going to have pups, we moved the 3 degus to all 1 story, until pups are ready for multi levels. We have 2 VERY large aquariums connected together at the top with a tube through the covers. They can go from one aquarium to the other through the tube. This is taking up my ENTIRE dining room table!
My husband made a divider for in the tube, so that Willy would have 1 side to himself until he could be with his new family. Willy sat in his half of that tube and chirped for 2 days. He wanted to go to the other side so bad! Sad

Well, this morning was the big day. Willy can be with his family! We took out the divider and the 2 girls went into Willy's side, because he has the wheel! Willy just followed them around. He was very happy. Big Smile
Then Lilly went over to her side to feed the pups, so Willy followed her over.
Willy peeked in the jar, his ears went back and he ran as fast as he could back in the tube! There was bedding flying straight up in the air! It was so funny! I don't think he was ready for pups, let alone 8 of them! Surprised
I watched for a while, to make sure he was going to be OK with them and he was. He went back over, I guess once the shock had passed, and went in the jar with Lilly and the pups.
All seems good now! Smile

Sorry this is so long, but for you to picture this, I needed to get fairly descriptive.

Is Willy neutered? If not then he will be able to make the girls pregnant again almost immediately. Even if you plan on breeding them, the poor girls ought to have a rest in between.

No, Willy isn't neutered, that's why he was away from the girls for 3 days. After that amount of time, it's safe for a while. We don't have a vet in this area that is willing to neuter such small animals. More than likely, as much as we hate to do it, Willy will probably have to go to a new home with a son or 2 Crying or Very sad .

I have read conflicting information about whether or not degus can back breed - ie get pregnant again soon after giving birth. Personally I wouldn't take the risk of leaving an entire male in with two females.

3 days is normally the correct amount of time to keep them seperated and then its usually ok to put them back in with the female and then if you don't plan on anymore litters seperate dad into a small group with the boys and keep mum with the girls Smile

It has been quite hectic around here and time got away from me. Embarassed

!st, Willy has been re-homed Sad . Sad, yes, but necessary. I called and he's very happy with his new friend.

Lilly's pups are ready to go. The 1st pair of boys went yesterday. The rest go this weekend. Hard letting them go!

Homes were found for all of Milly's pups, too. She has 3 boys, and 3 girls. An adopter agreed to take all 3 boys. Stick out your tongue  Someone is taking a pair of girls and we get to keep a little girl.  Very Happy

Everyone is happy and healthy. Thank you for thinking of us. Pics of my angels included!

Laurieb

Home for 16 degus. This takes my ENTIRE dining room table!

Big brother and little brother on their "blankie". A piece of it goes to every new home.

I'm so sorry. I read all of your posts and talking about your situation to my partner. Specially about Lilly. I'm comparing pictures of your expecting Lilly with my Lili. That made us sure in a time we will be in the same place as you today. Poor Willy boy....... Cry
Degus are our first animals we share after we are together, so we talk over and over again, what to do when the time come. We agree that Beti will stay with us and Lili too, but the pups? We'll see..

Your family portrait is just speechless.......

So all though you are from US, Pennsylvania, you manage to re-homed them? If I understand right you will be after tomorrow have just Lilly, Milly, and Milly's girl?

Good luck with everything!! Big Grin Big Grin

Lilly's will all be gone this weekend. We will have Milly's for a couple more weeks.

I had to find the strength to let them go, we had 17 in all! We would have had to build on a new room to our house!

It wasn't easy finding homes, when most people have never heard of degus! I first had to get people curious enough to check them out on this site and others. It was a 3 month ordeal, involving the schools, newspapers and even a grocery store. I got so many calls, in fact, I was able to be very picky about who got my babies! I practically tested them on degu care before even adding them on our adopters list!
I'm pretty sure that we have 6 wonderful families for our pups. Even a waiting list if any don't work out!

I'll be thinking of you. I hope all goes well for your Lily.

Yes, that's Willy.
The home that he originally going to go to with 2 sons, fell through. They wanted to take them, but needed to fly home and I felt uncomfortable letting them ride in the cargo department. Exclamation

A couple weeks ago, an acquaintance of ours, that also has degus, phoned to ask if we had an extra boy. Hers had pups 2 weeks before our oldest pups were born, she thought she kept the girls, and re-homed all the boys, only to discover that she still had a boy, and needed a buddy for him. I have an even amount of pups for pairs, so I offered Willy.
Willy is very happy with his new friend. I knew that he would do well with her young one because he was wonderful with his pups. He's a very calm, unaggressive male. I miss him. Sad

I'm glad that we will be able to keep a little girl. I have enjoyed watching them grow. I really wouldn't have traded this "accident" for anything in the world. Watching this degu family was truly amazing. Very Happy
