Today we were buying a cage for new one, all though we saw so far just one. So little and cute!!!!!!!!! Smile Smile Smile Smile
And in all 4 pet shops around here we haven't seen degu with a brush of dark fur at the end of a tail. This we see in every shops since we got Beti (he also don't has it). Lili from a private keeper and all his sisters and brothers(18) all have the beautiful tails and brush, just the father who was the first bought from the shop got only 3 cm long tail. Interesting?
So my point is: the rule is not to pick up degu for his tail, but all sellers convince us they don't do that. How so? Because their story is, that males bite each others tail when are from different litters. So they mark who is the boss.
I wont to ask this for several times, but today I was shocked real deep on behavior in shops. I want to ask this because Kirsty I know U have only males for 10 Years and I believe they are from different litters as they are rescued! Who is here right? I mean around 40 degus- males and females without hole tails???? And if I haven't read here about the food I would feed them with white bread, pieces of dry ananas, apples...Sugar, sugar..... ......

I can confirm male or female degus for that fact don't nip each others tails no matter what litter they are from so the pet shops are wrong. I have introduced male degus and never ever seen this behaviour.

The reason some have brushes and some don't is mainly down to quality of breeding, the more inbreeding in the line the likelyhood is increased of seeing problems such as fur chewing, bare tails (brush less), diabetes etc... I have a set of four that my other half brought me as a gift from a breeder after i lost one of my favourite boys and they all have perfect tails but i have rescues who come from a pet shop background and they have lost the brush. Poor diet can also attribute to the problem as well something of which we can't control till they come to live with us Wink

I'm so grateful to you, for Your advices, your opinions, Yours quick respond! Smile
How could we change the fact shops sale animals just for profit? I'm so angry, that in that situation I can not talk when the salesman's smiles in my face. Too bad I do not write English so good That I could express everything I feel. But we saved one-Beti. And it is so hard and sad to look away and think I am too small to do anything......

Thank You!

I hadn't had the girls long but one of them came to sit on my hand.
I kept still and was talking quietly to her to make her feel safe. A dog
barked outside and startled us both, she went to jump out of my hand
but i quickly cupped my hands around her.
Her tail slid between two of my fingers and as i put her back into the
cage i realised the end of her tail was gone. I was horrified, thought id
killed her  Crying or Very sad
But to be honest there was a little bit of blood, but the fur seemed to
have just sort of slipped from the bone. She didnt hold any grudges and
let me bathe the end of her tail but it soon stopped bleeding and there
was a sort of boney stump there. This dropped of after a little while.
It was a horrible feeling when i realised what had happened and i dont go
near their tails now if i can help it Sad

I am so sorry for your lost. But don't worry it was an accident. The difference is you love and care for yours animals, but that one I was talking about don't know what human love is, they suffer in small cages, without enough food and clean water, they are picked up by the tail...Until maybe someone save them.

Our Beti don't have his brush, but he is our dearest and so special in every way! Heart Love

Your english is fantastic Smile

The problem with pet shops is that they are all in it for the profit and many are not concerned about the animals welfare Sad

As for ideas on what you can do Think  Have you thought about maybe producing a website so that people in your country have a native tongue website? It doesn't have to cost anything i have a degu website as well as this forum that is hosted by moonfruit.com for free. You could also produce some leaflets and ask at the pet shops if they would be willing to have a read and offer them to potential buyers which you could also link back to your website. Not all pet shops are bad and you might be surprised how many would be interested in friendly advice Smile

Actually with my boyfriend have some ideas. In the future maybe we will have our own friendly advice store for all the rodents. Maybe a shelter. But it is hard here - county is fighting about the money and people didn't want the rescue shelter in one of the biggest city anymore (for cats and dogs). All the animals should have the medical confirmation about health. But in practice this don't work.
Few years ago was a huge thing in Slovenia about a middle age lady who herself lived in terrible conditions but over the years she offered help deserted dogs all over the country. She provided them home on her land, but didn't have food and nothing . A lot of people drove by and left dog on the road. And she picked up everyone. Country didn't help her much, some people donated her. There were signs of cannibalism because the stronger dogs have more surviving desire. At the end country decided to execute most of them(over 100), because they were friendly just to her.....All the media showed this and poor lady was so.....
This is have it works.
My boy and I don't have money for a big thing but we are open minded and hearted, so in the future we will come up with something. Advices we already give, but it's hard to awaken people's conscience if mostly they don't have it in such cases...

Degus can see in the dark but not anything near as good as the cat due to them being diurnal, degus have a special kind of eye sight though and  see in green and ultraviolet.

Fur chewing through stess is probably the reason why they have fur missing. It sound like the tanks are over crowded Sad
