NOW WE ARE A FAMILY AND BEFORE: What is the perfect amount of treats for the parents and babies? I mean a carrot: do you have a PHOTO of how much it will be suitable? I am worry not to over feed them! And banana - better dry or fresh? And rusk how much? And hazelnut? We are from the beginning as we found your site separated all this food (I tried myself), and I need exactly size and weight of every treats!
I don't want them to give the whole anything, ' cause they are so little - even the grow ones, but EXACTLY HOW MUCH????
and OATS???
Need advices.... |

I always say as a rule give a piece no bigger then the size of your thumb nail. Usually it works out at the perfect amount for a degu
With carrot i usually cut it into rings and if its a large ring i will cut it into four pieces and its is small i cut it into two. This works pretty well for other veggies too and with things like brocolli i tend to cut a floret into two pieces.
I would leave the nuts out till the babies are a little older, give them another 2 weeks and then start of offering them very small pieces. Once they are 8 weeks onwards there is no reason that they can't have a whole nut in the shell once every few months as it helps wear the teeth down.
With seeds such as pumpkin and sunflower they can have the whole thing.
Dried banana if it has nothing added to it such as honey is more popular then fresh with degus but only give occasionally as its a little on the sugary side for them but occasionally doesn't hurt and only give a thumb nail sized piece.
I sprinkle a small handful of oats (probably about 1 dessert spoon if that helps) on shelves and around the cage for my boys to encourage them to forage as its what they would do in the wild. The same goes for dried leaves and flowers too _________________

Thanks - now we know for sure we didn't over feed the parents before with treats.
Just 1 question: Beti and Lili love so much a biscuit or how can i say a rusk - something like dry diet bread not toast - we give that to them a half of thumb nail - maybe less every day. Too much?
And carrot and other vegetable - do you dry them for couple of days or just give it fresh? |

I would personally give them the biscuit maybe once or twice a week and on the other days vary the treats so they get something different each day
Veggie wise my guys get a mixture of both. They have fresh veggies and dried, i dry my own in the oven on a low heat for a couple of hours and they go mad for them _________________
