This is the place to ask questions and if you ever need help don't hesitate to ask. I'm just so pleased Beti is ok, it has really made my week Big Smile

If only biology was as interesting as this at school, i wish i had studied degus rather then the reproductive cycle of a fish  Laugh out loud

What is so interesting to me about all this, is how similar Degus are to other mammals as far as reproduction, instincts, etc.

Very fascinating!!

Dogs do the same thing, once neutered, there can still be mounting behavior, and they still have the capability to have intercourse without reproducing.  Also, female dogs engage in mounting behavior as well, since it's also dominance exercises for dogs as well.

I love how very inter-related all mammals seem to be.  Yes, I enjoyed the biology lesson as well!!

But, mostly, I am glad that little Beti is feeling better.  That's the best news of all!!!

Hallo Kirsty, thanks for your concern. I'm sorry I didn't answer before but we are going mad. We are moving and in 3 weeks go in Indonesia for half a year.... Our main aim is finding good home for family Crying or Very sad Crying or Very sad Crying or Very sad
So first: Beti! Funny guy. He don't allow us many touching no more now he is with mom. The stitches felt out and he wake us up with his mate call every now and than. We didn't actually see his penis yet, but he is a man with instinct, that's the fact.

Yesterday was a nightmare. In the usual cleaning of the cage, the little one of the left 2 boys lost a end of the tail. We didn't pull it or nothing and he didn't drop it, just the beautiful brush at the end - not like Beti who has drop it in the store, we suppose. We were so sad and.... Sad Sad Sad Sad Today looks better and heal OK.

One thing concern us more and more. Lili's eyes. Please look at pictures - she lies on Beti, and tell us what you think. She looks different, but so tired. Specially her left eye. We don't feed them sugar is it possible she has cataracts?

Please don't say it is. She acts normal, she don't drink much and she is active. Although she bites the cage like mad girl. And she loves and loves Beti soooooooooooooo and opposite.

I don't think Lili has cataracts i can't see any signs from the pictures, normally there is a white glow in the eye and i can't see anything. I've had degus who have altered in the face in the past as they have matured especially around the eyes maybe this is what is happening to Lili? One thing i did notice from the pictures do you think she has lost some fur from around her left eye? I thought it looked a little sparse so wondered if Beti had been over grooming her?

Hope you find them a good home? Will they be coming back to live with you when you get back from Indonnesia? We will all miss you at Degu Rock Smile

Fine. Hope you are right. Lili has a sign on a nose from nonstop (many hours per day) biting the cage. In old wooden cage she didn't do that. Maybe she gets boring from time to time.. Around left eye she has light fur but not from Beti. Maybe she change fur because of the winter and that's way she looks to us much different. Really hope so.

Yes the pair of youngsters in two days are going in good house to a man with warm heart and our Lili+Beti in another home. A girl who took first 2 girls offers us the home for as long we are in Indonesia. So they will be in foster till than. Maybe we'll return and go back immediately or not. We don't know yet. The time will tell. The girl works in association of torture against animal so we know for sure she will love them. She also recommended the vet for Beti's operation.

Do you maybe know any solution for stop biting the metallic cage? Lili will wear out her nose totally.

But till we go for real you will still be hearing from us. God bless you! Wink

Look at Beti and Lili!  They are still little love birds.  Bless you for having Beti neutered so they can stay together!!  I can tell they love each other very much.

I noticed what you mentioned about Lili's eye.  It does look a little funny, but agree with Kirsty, it does not look like cataracts to me.

Here is a picture of Chuqupa, she had severe cataracts in both eyes before she passed away.  Here you can maybe see what cataracts look like in the eye of a Degu, and I don't think that is how Lili's eye looks.:

(Click on the picture to see it larger)

You can see the cataract as kind of a white, milky color in the normal black eye.

Maybe does Lili's eye look a little "squinty"?  Like she doesn't open it all the way?  Sometimes they can get a good poke in the eye, from hay, bedding, or other Goos in the cage.  That can make their eye "squinty" for a while.  That did happen to Chuqupa a couple of times, and she had to get ointment in her eye, and it cleared right up.

As for her nose...I don't know why they do that stuff!  Maybe she will get bored of chewing the bars eventually.  They can get into these habits sometimes.

I am so sorry you will have to leave them for a little while!  But you have found a very WONDERFUL foster home for them, and this girl sounds like she will take excellent care of them.  That makes it much easier!
