Well I bought this new food today called SunSeed Degu Formula. It looks to be a keeper, no sugar and it has vitamin C so this should be good. I have been feeding my Degus hamster & gerbil mix because the pet store where we bought them and the book that we also purchased said this was a good thing to feed the critters. Well as it turns out its not. The food was mostly seeds and it has lots of sunflower seeds also. We had to put down the only male we had and we have had him for only 3, maybe 4 years. So I started doing research on the net about the Degus and found out all sorts of good info that was very helpful. Thanks to this forum and other unknown sites my Degus are now happy with the food and for the first time, eating Timothy hay and liking it very well. We have no Idea what caused the male to get sick only that the Vet said he had 3 large tumors in his abdomen. Maybe Cancer??? Who knows but I know they aren't doing well. They have lost the hair on there tails and the Vets around here have no clue what these animals are and what would cause this. So hopefully now that there diet has changed for the good they can live the rest of there lives more healthy. Oh and BTW nice forum and Keep up the good work on informing the public on the do's and dont's of Degus. If I would have found this place earlier rather then just reading a book of wives tales, I might not have lost one of my little Buddy's. Thanks |

aaaawwwww i'm sorry to hear you lost your little man, its always hard when they pass
Thanks for the compliments on the forum its always nice to hear we have helped people in some way. The whole reason i set this place up was i was fed up of people being given the wrong or misplaced info and i thought it would be nice to have the info in one place were people could ask questions even if they felt it silly without the fear of people mocking them like you get in some places. I like to think we are a friendly family orientated site
Regards the fur loss of the tail its quite common and its mainly down to poor breeding backround, genetics etc... It can be caused by other things but if there are no other symptoms then its usually poor genetics _________________

Oh I am so sorry you lost one of your little guys! I hope you'll have many more years with the little ones you have now.
There are a lot of people breeding Degus that really shouldn't be - because they inbreed and all that. I am thinking that may be partly what caused the tumors to grow on your first little guy. It doesn't sound like something the diet would have caused, I don't know if that makes you feel any better or not.
One thing is for sure - he had 3 or 4 very good years with you, and knew he was loved! _________________
