Hi I am waiting to adopt 3 baby degu and panic is setting in. I have seen on the RSPCA web site that their water needs to be de-chlorinated? does any one do this if so how?
Thanks Julie |

I use tap water, the water in our area doesn't seem to have much chlorine in. Mine also came from the RSPCA, and they didn't advise using bottled water.
Running it through a brita filter is probably enough, the water at my OH's parents house tastes like a swimming pool out of the tap, but is fine filtered. |

The dechlorination of water is an old myth that goes back years, the same goes for the one about adding bleach to your water to try and combat mouth disease. Its something that is totally out of date these days in most areas. In my opinion if your water is safe for you to drink then its safe your your animals. I have been using tap water for the last 10 years without any problems and haven't had a degu with problems yet _________________

Surely adding bleach would be rechlorinating?
I thought it was because some water processing places use a lot of chlorine to sterilise water, and degus are easily poisoned by chlorine. |

Adding bleach is hyperchlorinating water and at one time every single website and book told you to add bleach to your degus water to combat mouth disease which i thought was totally dangerous and never used it. My goo's have always had tap water but if you are worried running it through a Brita should help _________________

yeesh, poor degus. Water full of bleach doesn't sound nice.
Almost everything I read before getting them said to use bottled water as there were lower levels of chlorine than in tap water...but I kind of figured if tap water is OK for all other pets, it can't be that bad for degus. |

Oh I can't imagine putting chlorine in the water for these little guys. When I was first researching Degus, I saw 1 or 2 websites that still suggested hyperchlorinating the water - but most said plain old tap water. That does seem so dangerous!
I guess if you were super concerned you could always boil the water first. But I think Amythest is right - if your water is safe for you, it ought to be safe for your little guys! _________________

Are you adopting them from the RSPCA, Julie? There were 3 baby boys at my local one who have vanished. I know they sometimes move animals to another centre if they have no interest...Would be nice to know if they had moved on to another place! |
