well...after trying and trying to get out 2 degus to live together weve finally had to split them up,which is gutting!!
well sad to see them on their own,but as one is a lot smaller than the other, altho they are both sisters, she was getting hurt rather alot, and altho peeps have been saying they will calm down..they havent,
vets and the pet shop dont u'stand wots up with them as they say its quite unusual for 2 gals to be like that, but by the looks of it...we picked a rite pair.lol.
soo...id fink long and hard b4 housing degu's as theres a chance this may happen and ya gotta split them...which is horrible:O( |

The same thing happened to me with my 2 girls. They lived together for 6 months, but after that could never live together again. Making them into neighbors worked pretty well for me. I pushed their cages together so they could still snuggle and groom each other, but also the little one could get away from any bullying going on. Now my bully is the one that's left. I ended up not trying to get either of them a new friend, because I knew I couldn't handle more than 2 cages!
You're right, whenever you have more than 1 Degu you always need to be prepared to have more than 1 cage. You just never know what will happen with them! _________________

Keeping degus is never easy, i've only ever had to seperate two pairs who had lived together for years in my 11 years experience and in both cases one of them turned out to be ill Is there anything in particular that sets the fighting off? _________________

hey guys, thanks for the replies, means alot,
really is a shame to see them seperate, but aint worth seeing the little one(trixie) hurt all the time, she must ov bin soo scared cuz she wont even entertain having a sniff round where the other(shadow) is now, but, wot can ya do hey...bar love the ickle buggers.lol.
as for wot sets them off....nowt!! lol.
they wud be in their ball running around the flat 2gether wivout a prob..but as soon as they went bk in the tank...that was it,for hrs tho,not just like 5 mins,,went on for ages, it was stopping us getting them out as much cuz we dreaded putting them bk! but this last time they hadnt even bin out, they was totally fine all day, then they started and that was it,even the nx day they was at it,so had to seperate them.
amethystbelle....in wot way were urs ill then if ya dont mind me asking?? |

In both cases nothing at first appeared wrong but then within a few weeks one of them usually the instigator of the fighting passed away, both times showing no symptoms till the last minute but in both cases they were getting on in age around 4-5 years old.
How old are your girls? It sounds like it may be a dominence issue over territory of some kind. Its odd for two girls to fall out as its usually the males although in my experience i've only had to seperate two male pairs out of all the ones i've had. _________________
