Ok, so a few weeks back, my degus had their babies. So a few days ago, just a few days before I was gonna separate everyone, Basil (the father) attacked one of the degu baby boys. So I took the four boys out and put them in their own cage. Ok, I can understand this, competition for the females, this makes sense to me.
Ok, so I left the one female in with Clover (the mom) and Basil. Well today I find blood on the shelf, and when I go to investigate, the baby female has some deep bite marks on her back, and it's clearly Basil that was chasing her and biting her. Now, it's not like he was trying to mount her or anything, he was just chasing her and eventually I guess got a hold of her and inflicted these bite wounds.
This I don't understand. I know there can be fights if (for example) there are 2 males and one female, but this cage was situated with two females and a male, and I hardly think a 1/3 size baby degu posed any threat to Basil.
I have her separated now, and I'm going to get some blu-kote in the morning to put on her bite wounds.
I dunno, I guess I just wonder why the dad would go around attacking his kids like this? I mean I get he probably doesn't understand they're his kids, and I can understand why he'd attack the males. But why the female that he attacked? Any thoughts?
Besides this girl (who I took out) there is only one other female - she is the mother of the babies. Sometimes they get in a little bit of a squabble, but I've never seen her have any deep bites or anything like the way he attacked this girl.
Basil is very territorial over his food bowl - that's the one area where he gets aggressive. I have put another food bowl in, but it doesn't matter - whatever food bowl he is at (and he switches this up) if anyone comes near and tries to grab food out of that food bowl, he like tries to attack them...usually they move away...
And so like if Clover (the mom) goes for the food bowl, he'll like snap at her, but other than that, the two get along fine.. it's just this girl baby degu that he attacked like this
