Hi everyone, I just needed a bit of advice. I have four boys (2 in each cage) and for the last week or so I have been woken up in the early hours by their loud beeping. It usually goes on for around 20mins but can sometimes last longer. Im not usually worried when they make this sound but it is now beginning to concern me because it is happening every day and I have read that it is generally due to stress or if they get spooked.
I cant think of anything that would be making them unhappy, Do you think they may be trying to mimick the sounds from my alarm clock?

Also they all have bald patches on the backs of their necks, There has been lots of dry humping going on and lots of nibbiling too, Im guessing its the season for it? Ive asked the vet but she didnt know much about Degus and didnt have any answers for  me. Is there any advice you can share with me? Or sleeping tips!?

Thank you, Nancy.

Are the two sets of boys next to each other? If they are from experience could be something to do with that, degus are funny things at times :S

The bald patches will be from over grooming or from the dry humping and clinging on for dear life as the other runs away. You could rub a little gentle moisturiser onto the bare skin to promote fur regrowth something like E45 cream, a gentle unscented baby moisuriser or oil of evening primrose oil cream. This helps soften the skin and encourage the fur to regrow quicker but you don't have to do it, it will regrow eventually Smile

Thank you, To be honest ill avoid the moisturiser as I may lose a finger! All my boys hate the backs of their necks to be touched! They have been like it since babies.
They are in seperate rooms but they can hear each other, We had to seperate them about 6 months ago because they were fighting and it was so distressing.
They were all lovely and I would let them out everyday but since the awful fighting two of them wont let me near them. They make the dreadful warning sounds whenever I approach their cage so it has come to a point where I leave them well alone as I have experienced a very painful bite before and im petrified of it happening again.
I have never hurt them by mistake so I dont understand the sudden dislike to Mummy.
They dont mind Dad, He feeds them and has a little play when im in the other room.
They are all brothers and are about a year and a half old. Is there any reason for the sudden change in behaviour that im not seeing?
As for the squeaking, It continues as usual! like my lack of sleep!

Something must have triggered the change of behaviour. My first guess would have been if the other degus were in the same room as that can sometimes set them off but that isn't the case this time. It could be a case of it being breeding season or something such as an owl or something has spooked them. Maybe try giving them something to do before bed i.e let them out to see if it tires them or give them a box to destroy see if that makes any difference, it also might be worth while finding which set starts the other off Smile

Thank you,
I will give them something to play with tonight to see if it makes a diffrence and I might try taking their sand bath out and just giving it to them once in the morning and once before bed. They do love fresh sand so this hopefully will tire them out a little! I am exhausted!

I wish I knew why they changed, But I really have no idea. To be honest I spoil them rotten, they have a great diet and a peaceful home.
My only guess could be that the more dominant male was so vicious that it had an affect on all of them as they have turned from loving playful pets in to grumpy squealing biting monsters! Still love them tho! despite the nerve damage in my right hand!

Thanks again for your advice, Ill keep you updated!

Yes, they give nasty bites when they want, only been bitten badly twice and one was a rescue who was petrified and the other was a sick degu and boy do they bite deep and once they get hold they don't like to let go Sad

Try changing a few things and see if it works, they often stop as quickly as they start Wink

Keep us posted Smile
