· Quote

Hello,

I recently went to PAH to get more food for my gerbil and noticed the rescue centre they had was rather full with rats, degu and russian hamsters. I know when you see a poor little animal that is being sold all alone and unhappy that unfortunatly you shouldn't buy it as you are supporting their trade.

However would it be a good idea to adopt from their rescue centre and provide a loving foster home for them and actively search for suitable homes that I could also home check? I see it as a chance to give the animals some one to one time with people, to hopefully tame them and get them good homes rather than ones that buy them on a whim because 'you can pay as little as you want for them'!

I was just wondering what everone's opinions on the subject are? Should I or shouldn't I?

Thanks

Andy

I've nothing against giving the rescues a home as they have been handed in by someone who can no longer look after them by no fault of their own. Its just the idea of buying degus from them to fund them getting more in. If you think you can give them a home or find them a good home then go for it as its better for them to go to someone who can give them time then to end up with some kid who has seen them and wanted them on a whim Smile

Thanks for your reply,

yea your seeing it exactly how I am, but other people on other forums are saying just to stay well clear of pah because of their reputation, i know it's something that could go well or prove to be a nightmare. A lady has helped a store before when they had pregnant rats, her address was then given out to customers who wanted to give up their pets to the rescue, but pah cinsidored them unsuitable, so they ended up at this ladys front door. which is something I definetly don't want!

But it could eb as simmple as taking them home, looking after them for a few weeks/months and then finding them a happy forever home! I'm so torn, my heart goes one way, my head goes the other

My friend who occasionally comes on here has taken in rabbits from pets at home no worries :s They have a bad reputation but the rescues that get handed in are nothing to do with the poor reputation. On a personal level my local store really looks after the animals well much better then any of the other local petstores. and i do know chinchillas and degus do usually come from one source a central breeder. At the end of the day its personal choice, don't let the opinion of others put you off if you think you can help, the rat lady was an extreme case i imagine Smile

yea, I'm sure she was a one off case. I think I'm going to go speak to them after the weekend, and if the discussion goes well and they're still there I'l take them on.

Realistically how long do you think it will take to find them a new home? from looking around, there don't seem to be many degu rescues, compared to rats, so I'm sure it'l only take a few months?
