Hi, was just wondering if anyone else has fussy eaters? We are mixing the food they came with with guinea pig pellets but they will search through the bowls to pick out bits they want i.e. anything other than the pellets. Whenever I see them eating it is mostly hay. Will they eventually eat the pellets if we don't top the bowls up daily?
They are also the same with treats. We bought some walnuts but they rarely take them, much preferring the bran flakes! |

Degus can be picky, i usually leave the bowls in till most of its gone so they eat everything. Depends how stubborn these little guys are, try it for a day and see is all i can say I wouldn't worry about them eating a lot of hay as thats good for them and is good for the gut aswell as wearing the teeth down.
Walnuts are ok as the occasional treat so don't give them too often as are bran flakes. Also try shredded wheat bitesize (one breaks down into 2 or 3 bites), ryvita, the odd raisin once a week don't hurt as won't the odd Pumpkin or sunflower seed. Dried flowers and leaves are a good natural treat and safe for daily use. Have a look at the treats sticky _________________

How much hay is it normal for them to get through? I am refilling their hanging hay ball every day though I'm not sure if they are actually eating all of it or just moving it somewhere.
I was peeling some potatoes last night and was wondering if they could have the peelings once they dry out? |

The more hay they eat the better it won't hurt them at all. They probably aren't eating it all they might be moving it around the cage, do they have a nest box?
I personally wouldn't give them potato peelings as i'm sure there is something in the skin thats not good for rodents, i have given them dried out potato before and they enjoyed that. The same goes for sweet potatoes don't give them the skin its toxic _________________

I am only refilling their food bowls when they are empty now so they have no choice but to eat everything! How often would you suggest giving them bran flakes? They are currently getting about half of one each a day but broken broken into tiny pieces. |
